A Bigger View Article: The Art of Small
Talk
Sissy and etiquette expert, Jodi Smith, explore the significance of
small talk and give some great tips on how to really make the most of a
conversation. The art of small talk is an imperative skill to have in both
the social and professional world. Knowing the proper etiquette for
holding a good conversation gives you the ability to make connections,
build rapport and even create relationships.
While it may seem that some people are born natural gabbers, good
conversationalists know practice is the key to success; which means that
with a few basic tips and some added time spent practicing you too can be
a pro!
Jodi provides some expert tips to ensuring a good conversation
anywhere, any time:
- Be Prepared: Always be prepared to offer a
self-introduction. Along with this you should also include some little
bits of information about yourself. By doing this, you will keep the
conversation flowing and help the other person ask you a question.
- Have a Backup: Do your homework; make sure to have
a few fresh topics in your mind, should there happen to be a lull in the
conversation.
- Smile: Jodi points out that while it seems obvious,
smiling is the key to a successful conversation. Being a good
smiler is part of the art of being a good conversationalist.
- Appearance: In addition to carrying on a good
conversation, it's important to make sure your attire is suitable for
the occasion. Your appearance should reflect the situation. Whether it
is a social function or business event, you always want to make sure to
look your best. Jodi advises that for a business function, you want to
make sure you dress appropriately to project a professional appearance.
For such occasions she recommends your best grey or black business suit.
For more casual affairs, Jodi suggests watching the trends and attire of
those around you, but she also warns to be careful about getting too
relaxed. While the work place is becoming more casual, it is important
not to let it take away from your professional appearance. By taking
cues from co-workers you can be sure to avoid making any real faux pas.
- Finally, do a quick check before leaving the house in order to catch
any last minute appearance slip-ups and make sure that you look your
best for your next conversation.
