A Big Life: New Year's Around the World

Sissy has some great suggestions to feel like you're leaving town this New Year's Eve, even if you're not:
  1. Be bold and try something new. There are many great alternatives to expensive champagnes that are still festive. Speak to someone at your local wine store for more suggestions. Ask about wines, sparkling wines and other beverages served in different parts of the world.
  2. Serve Cava, a sparkling wine from Spain. You can purchase a nice bottle of Cava for under $20. Light and refreshing, you can serve this sparkling wine anytime, not just for your midnight toast. Think about having an extra bottle on hand for your New Year's Day brunch! Choose a Brut or Extra Brut.
  3. A truly unique alternative to champagne is sake. Tom Stephenson, of Crush Wines in New York City points out that sake is very versatile and will be a nice compliment to the wonderful food you are serving.
  4. Select a dry rose champagne from France. A dry rose champagne without a hint of sweetness compliments a New Year's feast.
  5. Prosecco is a reasonably priced sparking wine from Italy. Drink Prosecco at midnight and toast by saying "Salute!"
