In the adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, Depp steps back a century as a mystic investigator whose drug-fueled visions are called upon to solve the gruesome crimes of Jack the Ripper. Fans of the original work were disappointed that Albert and Allen Hughes lost the complexity of the dense tale, but Depp doesn't disappoint as the opium and absinthe-addicted Police Detective Aberline. He's a darkly romantic hero, touched by sadness and loss, in an even darker world of Masonic madness, royal conspiracy, poisonous class prejudice, and abject poverty. Depp makes you feel his faith in mankind slips away with every investigation.
