Jeremiah Chechik's sentimental story of an adorable but
erratic mentally impaired young woman (Mary Stuart Masterson), her fiercely protective big brother
(Aidan Quinn), and the sweetly eccentric oddball (Depp), is
so sugary and sticky that it may cause sugar shock in some viewers. Any
similarity between the cute antics and rosy prospects of these fun-loving grown
children and the real world of the mentally challenged is coincidental, but the
cast almost makes you believe in it, especially Depp's out-of-time silent movie
clown. His brilliant recreation of Charlie Chaplin slapstick and Buster Keaton dead-pan is some of the most impressive
physical comedy seen on screen since the silent era. It borders on comic ballet.
