Performances cementing his reputation are unsettling, funny, depraved

People are
used to being disappointed by master thespian Robert De Niro these days, but on the other hand,
the actor may well be at the height of his popularity. Have any of his classic
movies done as well as his "Fockers" pictures? Such are the paradoxes of the
latter-day career of, let's face it, one of the greatest U.S.-born actors to
ever appear onscreen -- and one whose greatness is not, contrary to some
conventional wisdom, even close to being dissipated. His performance in the
underseen 2010 prison drama "Stone," with Edward Norton, shows him at the top of his game,
as it were. As his latest, the supernatural thriller "Red Light," hits theaters,
we thought it might be a good time to look at the varied faces of De Niro at his
finest.
