10 stellar shows that haven't received the ratings they deserve
By Kenny Herzog
These days, it's not enough for a TV show to simply be well-liked by audiences, championed by critics or revered come awards season. For a series to truly stand apart from its myriad competitors, it has to achieve the virtually unattainable hat trick and accomplish all three of the aforementioned accolades. If a comedy, drama or even reality franchise falls short of that high-watermark, it can spell doom in the form of premature cancelation or marginal recognition from a comparatively tiny cult viewership.
This quandary becomes particularly relevant as the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards approach. Some nominated programs, like "Nurse Jackie" and "Luther," also receive generally favorable reviews even if millions of homes aren't tuning in. Then there are ill-fated cases like "Awake," which garnered optimistic endorsement from the press but barely made it through one season intact, let alone up to the Emmy winners' podium. And then, of course, there are little-seen reality hopefuls like "Undercover Princes" and "Undercover Princesses," which were a cut above their genre peers but were never quite taken aboveboard by prime-time couch potatoes.
So, we thought it our duty to highlight 10 series that, whether nominated this Sunday or more wholly overlooked, haven't received -- or never will get the chance to receive -- the widespread, massive ratings they deserve.
