40 Years On: The Summer of Love
LOVE: Love was the great L. A. band that got away: Founder Arthur Lee pursued a folk-rock vision soon eclipsed by the Byrds, songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David bristled at Love's version of their "Little Red Book", and the band's fusion of folk, baroque, Spanish and rock elements eluded radio's embrace. Their second 1967 album, "Forever Changes," a commercial disappointment, has since been elevated to true masterpiece status.
