Genicanthus bellus is usually found in extremely deep waters but was observed in shallow waters in Cenderawasih Bay. Though only 11 percent of the Bird's Head Seascape is protected, the area is recognized as a global priority for protection of its biodiversity and sustainable management of its important fisheries.
