ANGELINA JOLIE: "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" may been a fantasy come true for fan
boys and videogame geeks, yet paradoxically this otherwise escapist action flick
sparked an epiphany in social awareness for star Angelina Jolie, whose
experiences on location in Cambodia prompted her to become involved with the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refuges. The UNHCR named her a goodwill
ambassador in 2001, ignoring her then-controversial public image. She since has
mixed her ongoing film career with high-profile humanitarian activism, visiting
troubled nations throughout the world and publicizing the plight of
disadvantaged cultures in her own family vision: She has two children adopted as
orphans from ravaged regions, Maddox (from Cambodia) and Zahara (from Ethiopia),
and with partner Brad Pitt chose to give birth to their daughter,
Shiloh Nouvel, in Namibia. Jolie is seen here in Africa, accompanied by Ann
Curry of the "Today" show, shortly before Shiloh's arrival.
