Sometimes, an ostentatiously outsized diamond ring does not a celebrity
engagement make. Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson are shooting down reports that they've
decided to make their rekindled romance legally binding. On Sunday, Britain's
News of the World claimed the issues-dealing funnyman, 39, had popped the
question, citing as proof a picture of the actress, 29, sporting a
doorknob-sized solitaire on her all-important finger last week in Boston, where
she's filming the romantic comedy "Bride Wars." "Kate supported Owen during his
low patch and that proved to him she's the woman he wants to be with forever," a
Hudson "pal" proclaimed to the tabloid. "He picked out the ring and went for the
biggest one he could find. He was nervous about proposing but Kate was thrilled
and the whole thing was really emotional." Alas, the whole thrilling, emotional
thing apparently never happened. "She's definitely not engaged," Kate's
mouthpiece insists to Us, adding that the ring was merely a prop for her
nuptial-themed flick. Wilson's rep also moved quickly to quash the rumblings,
issuing several "I do" denials.

In other rock-related news, exceedingly optimistic newlyweds-cum-soul mates Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon made the scene at Time magazine's 100
Most Influential People in the World soiree Thursday night in New York, where
their glittery bands turned them into walking disco balls. People helpfully
breaks down the specs on their gaudy baubles, with the
bright-and-shiny-object-loving chanteuse's $2.5 million pink diamond sparkler
crammed with a 10-carat emerald-cut center stone, 58 smaller pink diamonds and
two half-moon diamonds hugging either side. "I wanted to do something extremely
special, something that Mariah would really appreciate," Cannon explains to the
magazine. "We got the pinkest stone we could find, surrounded by other
diamonds." Sighs a contented Carey, "It's so clear, you can see my finger
through it." The spendthrift actor's hefty band is equally flashy, and by
flashy, we mean it looks as if it was dipped in glue and rolled in a bowl full
of diamonds. But the lovebirds of seven long weeks seem most enamored with their
his-and-her tattoos -- she has "Mrs. Cannon" inked down the center of a
butterfly on her lower back while he's emblazoned "Mariah" in approximately
six-inch-high letters from one shoulder blade to the other. "Rings and all that
is special and exciting," Nick declares to the mag. "But to us, tattoos mean
more than anything because it's something we never thought we'd do." (And
somewhere, a tattoo removal service sits by the phone, impatiently waiting for
the inevitable call to fire up the laser.)

For Paris Hilton, a diamond really does mean forever. The Benji
Madden-besotted starlet is currently showing off a double band on her ring
finger, a gift from her Good Charlotte boyfriend of just over two months. But she
tells People the diamond-encrusted ring isn't a sign of an imminent aisle-walk,
downplaying, "No, it's just a present. He's sweet." Still, Madden is likely
feeling the pressure from Hilton's repeated declarations that only the cold
clammy hand of death will tear them asunder. "I'm so happy. I'm so in love. I
know I want to spend the rest of my life with him," she baby-talked to an
understandably skeptical David
Letterman last week. "I know I want to be with him forever." When the "Late
Show" host expressed his reservations about her as-long-as-we-both-shall-live
pronouncement, Paris adopted a more forceful tone as she defended their twoo
love, insisting, "He's the most loyal, honest, incredible person in the world. I
feel just blessed to have found him. He's changed my life." Another hopeful
sign: She was far more enthusiastic about Benji than the various branded
products she was plugging on Letterman, including her champagne in a can and
fake hair in a box (feel free to insert your own "dumber than a box of hair"
joke here). Hilton's product shilling continued Friday night when she donned
cascading Barbie-like tresses when she and Madden hit Los Angeles hot spot
Villa. Still, she assures People, "When I was younger I loved to go out, but now
that I'm in a really great relationship it's so much more fun to stay at
home."
