Turns out there really wasn't anything to those rumors from earlier this week
that Owen Wilson had popped the question to Kate Hudson. People reports the baggage-hampered honeys, who
rekindled their romance over Oscar weekend in February, have
once again decided to go their separate ways.
"It's a pretty bad breakup," says a pal of the issues-dealing funnyman, who
was spotted in Philadelphia on Wednesday shooting "Marley & Me." "Owen said
it was a tough one. He definitely doesn't want to dwell on it. He wants to put
it behind him."
Hudson, who touched off the engagement rumblings after she was seen tooling
around Boston with a behemoth diamond on her finger (it was a prop for her
currently filming romantic comedy "Bride Wars"), "feels dumb thinking it was so
serious," a confidante tells the mag.
The plug-pulling comes just weeks after Kate rang in her 29th birthday with Owen, 39, in Miami,
where they celebrated over lunch with his parents and some late-night smooching
at a South Beach hot spot.
They "were very sweet looking," a spy told People at the time. "It was super
lovey-dovey."
A few days later, however, the Miami Herald claimed the actor had
unsuccessfully put the moves on a "hot chick" at a local club.
Wilson was also apparently on the prowl in New York last weekend, hitting a
nightclub with two women in tow.
"He was pretty chummy with the ladies," a spy tells People. "He was certainly
doing some sweet talking. He looked happy to be there hanging with them."
The next evening found him at Butter enjoying a tête-à-tête with a "sexy
blonde."
This second split comes almost exactly a year after their first one, which
followed eight months of fickle togetherness that supposedly started when they
were out stumping for the instantly forgettable "You, Me and Dupree."
Kate quickly rebounded with a public face-sucking summer fling with Dax Shepard; Wilson became an unwilling tabloid subject
after a reported suicide attempt in August.
The actress, whose marriage to shaggy-haired Black Crowes rocker Chris Robinson fizzled in 2006 (they have a shaggy-haired
4-year-old son, Ryder) recently spoke about the battle between her maternal and
basic instincts.
"I would love nothing more than to have a good, honest makeout sesh, but I
find it really hard because I'm a mom," she told Britain's Sunday Times. "I need
to find that 18-year-old in me again, who was way more adventurous when it came
to kissing boys."
Explained Kate, "Any guy I ever meet is always going to come second to my
son. And you get to weed out the boys from the men. You definitely know which
ones are the boys."
She also fessed up to her urge to give Ryder a little brother or sister.
"I'm a mom and that's my first priority," said Hudson. "I can't wait to have
more. I'm at that place when I'm ready to have another one and Chris and I are
not together. I'm like, 'Oh no! Uh-oh! I'm ready.'"
