Cameron Diaz can't seem to stop stumbling into sticky
situations. Just days after she sparked an international incident in Peru with her
unwise choice of accessory, the star has found herself in the middle of Criss Angel's very public divorce battle.
The New York Post reports the hirsute, highlight-loving prestidigitator (real
name: Christopher Sarantakos) materialized Friday at a New York courthouse,
where Joann Sarantakos, his seemingly surreptitious spouse of five years,
accused him of "mental cruelty and abandonment" and of having an affair with
Diaz.
Mrs. Sarantakos alleges Angel kept their marriage under the radar to boost
his appeal, enigmatic though it might be, a charge her father echoed to
reporters.
"When his career took a jump forward, he became a different person," he fumed
of his son-in-law. "He's in love with himself. He's a narcissist ... My daughter
was never acknowledged as his wife. He told her it was a better single image,
than a married image."
Now, that "single image" could land Diaz, whom Angel was first spotted cuddling with in May, in the thick of divorce
proceedings.
"We're naming Cameron Diaz as his lover," Sarantakos' lawyer informed the
court. "We will subpoena her as soon as she comes back to New York." (No word on
whether Minnie Driver and Paris Hilton, who were previously linked to the
illusionist, could also end up being served.)
But the moneybags "MindFreak" star not
only disputes his wife's claims that he's been less than forthcoming with
financial support (his attorney labels the allegations as "simply not
accurate"), he also tells OK! that the accusations in the divorce filing
are "preposterous" and "completely fabricated."
"If you look at when I met Cameron and when [Joann] filed for divorce --
which is more than a year ago -- you'll see that the two have nothing to do with
each other," he explains to the magazine. "Cameron is my friend and is
unfortunately dragged into the mix of this because of people trying to
perpetuate their career."
Continues Criss, "When the truth comes out ... everyone will see their
devious scheme and will understand what their whole motive truly is. The world
will see that I am a man of integrity and of my word. We will see what her true
motive is."
Seconds Diaz's rep to People, "When Cameron met Criss Angel in May of this
year, he had been separated from his wife for over a year and she had already
filed a petition to divorce him in 2006."
Besides, the spokesman adds for good measure, "Cameron and Criss went on only
four dates over a month ago and have no current relationship."
No word on whether Angel's inability to keep his cakehole from conjuring up
cringe-inducing sentiments about Cameron played a role
in her supposedly saying "abraca-pocus" and making the romance disappear.
"I'd like to dedicate this escape to my girl 'Trouble,' aka Cameron. I love
you baby," Criss clunkily announced after his recent Times Square stunt
involving a suspended, cement-encased cube. "Have a safe trip to Europe for your
'Shrek' tour."
