Although his acrimonious divorce from Heather Mills is not yet finalized,
Paul McCartney appears to be getting by with a little help
from his friends -- his famous, pretty blond friends.
The New York Daily News reports the pop icon, 65, enjoyed a tête-à-tête with
Renée Zellweger, 38, at a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers concert Saturday night
in the Hamptons.
The weedy if freakishly muscular Oscar winner, who has a well-documented soft
spot for musical men (see her "fraud"-annulled marriage to Kenny Chesney and onetime romance with Jack White), "smiled, laughed and hung on [McCartney's] every
word," according to the paper, which snapped the pair amiably chatting.
Of course, just two weeks ago, the rumor mill was abuzz with rumblings that
Paul was cozying up to Christie Brinkley after they were seen hanging out at
a James Taylor performance in the Hamptons.
The well-maintained, four-time-divorced model supposedly danced with
McCartney as Taylor crooned "How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved by You)," leaving him
"beaming," according to the London Daily Mail.
At the Petty show, Christie was tossing "less-than-delighted glimpses" at
McCartney and Zellweger, claims the Daily News, although word from her musical
ex, Billy Joel, is that she and Paul are just longtime friends.
And a spy tells the paper that's likely the case with the squinch-faced
actress, as well.
"I don't believe there's anything between them," the mole tells the paper.
"He was sitting with Amy Poehler and her husband, and [Renee] was with two
friends and left 15 minutes after he did."
Meanwhile, in a story that has "wishful thinking" written all over it, the
Daily Mail floats the possibility of a reconciliation between McCartney and
Mills, who have been splitting time with 3-year-old daughter Beatrice during
their separate summer sojourns in the Hamptons.
"Paul and Heather are definitely much friendlier now," an "impeccably placed
source" asserts to the paper. "The bond which has brought them back together is
their little girl. In the heat of the moment, a lot of hurtful things were said
and done, but one thing Paul can't ignore is that Heather's a fantastic mum and
Bea completely adores her."
Adds the insider, "That has changed Paul's thinking more than anything else."
