(Note: This review refers to the Blu-ray version of the DVD.)
The original voyages of the Starship Enterprise get more than a simple digital buffing with the newly remastered collection. This is the classic bridge crew: manly yet amiable Captain Kirk (William Shatner), unemotionally logical yet unfailingly loyal Vulcan science officer Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), country doctor in space Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Chief Engineer Scotty (James Doohan), navigator Lt. Sulu (George Takei) and communications officer Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). (Chekov didn't join the cast until Season 2.) Relive some of the best and most popular episodes the show has to offer: "Balance of Terror" (a battle of wits and strategy with the Romulans), "Shore Leave" (an amusement park of the mind), "Arena" (Kirk vs. the lizard man), the award-winning "City on the Edge of Forever" (scripted by Harlan Ellison), and "Space Seed" (which inspired "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan").What's new are the special effects and sound effects, redone with digital technology. (Don't worry, the cheap sets and '60s color scheme remain untouched.) The producers have been careful to match the look and style with the rest of the show, but the Blu-ray release also features the original, unretouched versions in all their low-tech glory for nostalgics, purists and Trekker obsessives. Also includes various featurettes, interviews, galleries of stills and art and other supplements from the previous DVD release, plus new "Starfleet Access" mode with picture-in-picture interviews and pop-up trivia for five episodes. Twenty-nine episodes on seven discs in a simple, efficient case with hinged trays.
