The Hollywood Reporter -- Corralling a group of movies that range, alphabetically, from Argo to Zero Dark Thirty, the Producers Guild of America has revealed the 10 films nominated for its Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures. Along with the two political thrillers, the nominees include the year-end awards contenders Lincoln, Life of Pi, Les Miserables and Django Unchained as well as the specialty films Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook. Skyfall, the 23rd and most successful James Bond movie, also earned a slot.
In the PGA's animation category, Disney took three spots for Pixar's Brave as well as Frankenweenie and Wreck-It Ralph. Rounding out the category are Focus' ParaNorman and DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians.
Among the films that failed to make the PGA motion picture list is The Dark Knight Rises, despite the fact that the PGA nominated The Dark Knight in 2009. Also among the missing are such critically applauded films like as The Master, Amour, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel -- which proved more popular with Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild voters -- and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
The PGA list reflects the growing consensus about the past year's top films. The PGA roster matches the American Film Institute's list of the top 10 movies of 2012, with one exception: The AFI included Knight, while the PGA opted for Skyfall. Eight of the PGA's choices also were nominated for Globes as either best drama or best comedy/musical; the two PGA entries without Globes best pic noms are Beasts and Skyfall. Argo, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Playbook also have earned SAG ensemble nominations, along with Marigold Hotel.
The PGA Awards are closely watched as Oscar signposts because the PGA motion picture winner has gone on to win the best picture Academy Award 16 times during the past 23 years, including The Artist in 2012. The 24th annual Producers Guild Awards will be held Jan. 26 at the Beverly Hilton.
The guild previously announced nominees for its documentary motion picture award: A People Uncounted, The Gatekeepers, The Island President, The Other Dream Team and Searching for Sugar Man.
This year’s ceremony also will include special honors for Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, J.J. Abrams and Russell Simmons.
