Posted: 3/9/2003A review of Enemy at the Gates by Showbizbuddy
Joseph Fiennes, Jude Law, and Ed Harris fight the good fight in this fine film about the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II. Joe and Jude are on the same side (Russian) while Ed is a German officer designated to kill Jude who is fast becoming a legend as a sharpshooter taking out German officers and soldiers. The opening scenes of the film show Russian soldiers fighting a battle they cannot win on a lake. When they try to jump out of their boats to avoid being hit by gunfire they are fired on by their own officers! Talking to my Russian online friends I learned that current audiences in Russia seeing the film were horrified to learn of this incident! It caused an uproar in their country. The story is very well presented and you come to respect the character and motivations of the various leads. They come to repect each other too. The lovely Rachel Weiss adds love interest. The special effects and cinematography are first rate! There is a lot of suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is a war film worth seeing. It opens your eyes to the horrors of war, the respect soldiers on opposite sides may have for each other, and the atrocities order by the Russian dictator Stalin.
