All reviews by user Date ![]() Helpful Rating 2 out of 2 users found this helpful After seeing this movie last night Oct 18 on HDnet, I have reflected on how much love a mother can have for a child she has carried for 9 months but has never seen. Only the small cry right after birth, before the nurses took her away, cemented the desire to search for her daughter for the next 7 years. After finding her, the circumstances which led her daughter to discover her "governess' was her REAL mother, grew to a climax I shall never forget. This was an award winning performance by Sophie Marceau which had left me emotionally stirred and crying. Bravo Sophie! Was this review helpful? Thats not a bad thing. All the actors are driven and believable! It brings out the true consequences of cheating on your spouse. So those of you who want to commit adultery, see this movie. It will make you think thrice before letting your genitals think for you! Was this review helpful? The naturalness of the dialogue was uncanny. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were so perfectly cast and deserve all the accolades, and then some. Ditto for the director, Richard Linklater. I dare say Ethans unassuming natural acting was probably influenced by divorcing his wife, actress Uma Thurman. If youve ever had a one night stand, youll know this movie is for REAL, because any relationship that starts in bed BEFORE marriage, will ultimately END in bed DURING marriage. Thats the message in this movie coming from both ends...directly and subliminally. Not for the young or inexperienced at having their hearts broken or being used. They will find it boring. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful King Kong is a great remake of the 1976 remake of the original and stands clearly in the forefront. Just running a bit too long, it captures the essence of the beast and the vulnerability of man when greed, power and fame are at hand. It also captures the tenderness of a giant ape smitten by a beautiful woman who also grows to feel a strange attraction towards the doomed ape. The special effects were outstanding. The only thing that was over done was the movement of Kong which was much too fast for its size. The 1976 Dino De Laurentiis remake of Kong was more realistic in that aspect, which in turn made you feel the hugeness of the ape, especially when you heard the timing in between his pounding footsteps when it walked. If you have a LOT of time to blow, this version is still quite the remake of remakes. Was this review helpful? Also, the mixed dancing is another saving factor and the acting by some wonderful young newcomer kids! The Tango demo was awesome by Antonio and the girl introduced to the misfits in detention. The rest of the Ballroom music was kind of lame in arrangement and sound quality as well as the presentation and comments by the M.C. in the competition. Bad acting there. Lot of good slices of advice for life in this movie using dance as the catalyst! All in all, it was fun and worth seeing! Was this review helpful? The characters reminded me of the Family shows of the 50s, one being The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. By todays standards, their adventures would seem boring because they always had a moral to teach relating to family values. America has lost those values since the good ol days and Reese Witherspoon was the catalyst in making Pleasantville lose theirs. Knowledge is power but it also corrupts. This seems to be the overall message in this wonderfully different movie. Don knotts was a welcome sight and also, sadly, the late J.T. Walsh. Helping the storyline, the black and white format mixed with occasional color was a fantastic concept! Go see it! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful I was pleasantly surprised to see Adam Sandler in a dramatic role for a change. This movie really shows his true potential and range as an actor. He still had some lines which cracked me up as only he can deliver them. This movie was the perfect vessel for him to showcase his God-given talent.
Great story though somewhat limp at the end, great setting, plot, and all the characters were superb, even the dog. If youve hardened your heart in recent years towards your family, this movie will turn your heart back into flesh. Warm and fuzzy. I loved it! Was this review helpful? But as the movie progressed, it kinda fizzled out. Clips were borrowed from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The cloud formation with lightning, the bright lights outside the house, the blaring brass-like musical notes coming from the machines, etc. etc. The basement scene IS boring and stagnant as one other reviewer accurately pointed out. Tom Cruise and his children were not likeable at all. Especially bratty Dakota Fanning who you just wanted to get zapped by the aliens. SCREAM, SCREAM, SCREAM! SHUT UP ALREADY!! We get the point! The focus on this broken family was a major reason for the boredom because it shifted the attention AWAY from the aliens and their purpose as well as Tim Robbins paranoid character who just wasnt necessary. With all his babbling about the intentions of the aliens, it just didnt fit. What poor script writing. The ending was YUK! You have buildup, then a letdown. Also, why didnt the bacteria kill the aliens when they came to bury their machines way back when? Originally they were supposed to be from Mars where there is NO bacteria. Stick to the original story Spielberg, before you blow another one at MY expense! All that hype for nothing except your fat pocketbook.
Close Encounters was your masterpiece. Dont double dip on it please.
Special effects were superb though! Thats about it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 18 out of 20 users found this helpful Posted: 9/16/2005A review of Just Like Heaven by rjennica1 Reese steals your heart yet again in this romantic comedy about the
in-between of life and death. Mark was great also and carried the movie on an equal footing with Reese while the chemistry between the two was almost instantaneous. Engrossing and almost believable, this movie has perfect timing between comedic moments and extreme drama. The former often popping up unexpectedly. It all went by too fast and when it ends, you'll think time and space stopped for you. The ending was...naw, I'm not going to spoil it. See it! You'll LOVE it! Great for sentimental lonely ugly short guys with no future or job. Was this review helpful? With all of its impossible and improbable situations presented, it teaches you to disregard everything that's decent and sacred. It defiles parenthood and children! It's NOT about love, it's about lust and the quest to satisfly it. It's pure unadulterated Hollywood garbage!! And that's being very kind. Save your money! Was this review helpful? I wish it was playing longer so I could bring all my friends and relatives to see it! What a joy to behold! The children are absolutely PRECIOUS! You'll fall in love with them and this documentary type movie. Wish they made more of them. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 7/5/2005A review of The Aviator by rjennica1 This DVD movie held my attention for what seemed like a brief moment in time though it was almost 3 hrs long. It was spendidly realistic and opened my eyes as to why Pan Am, TWA and Eastern Airlines, all went bankrupt. I didn't realize the airline industry was so downright dirty and cut-throat right from its INCEPTION!!!
No wonder airlines come and go like clothing fads! I had a slight 7 month stint with the Airlines as a Flight Attendant and realized what kind of people were in it and quit. As the movie "AIRPORT" jokingly alludes to, the airline industry is '..full of liars and cheats!'. It was meant to be funny but I found out the hard way that it's the TRUTH! No wonder pilots love to drink themselves silly. I LOVE flying and LOVE serving people. It's everything IN-BETWEEN that's PURE UNADULTERATED CRAP!! Howard Hughes was a man of INTEGRITY and didn't take ANY CRAP from anybody! The court scene was one of the triumphs of his career and made me Hoorah! The airplane dialogue was intriguing and facinating! I wish we had a man like Howard Hughes today. Richard Branson (Virgin Airlines) the entrapraneur, is the ONLY one that comes to mind as of this date. As many reviewers already mentioned, this movie had a weak start and a weaker ending. However, Cate Blanchett nailed Katherine Hepburn and her voice, but Beckinsale was somewhat weak in her portrayal of Ava Gardner. Liv Tyler would've been a better choice because she looked more like Ava. Just look at her in the tender scene with Ben Affleck (before he leaves to intercept the huge meteor) from the movie, 'Armageddon'. DeCaprio was intense and believable minus the voice. (Still sounds like a teen). You can enjoy this DVD movie without a big screen TV, but you'll enjoy it even MORE with one and a good sound system. Was this review helpful? He was so natural in it and that's his genius. Scarlett Johanson was also natural and was the perfect catalyst for the story to uncover Bill's genius. The supporting cast was great! The story was so different and refreshing! I highly recommend it!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful This movie was very disconcerting. However, it was good to see Julia Roberts again. She was her usual brilliant self as was Jude Law and Clive Owen. Natalie Portman on the other hand dissapointed me with her choice to accept a role as a strip teaser. This role would've been better suited for Britney Spears, not that she could have acted better...it just seems to suit her character seeing she loves to curse, smoke, and wear almost nothing at all. As usual, Hollywood slime directors just like to get their paws on the most beautiful young girls and have them take their clothes off, corrupt and trash themselves by playing slutty characters. It hurt my ears hearing Natalie say the "f" word. I thought it was a love story but the movie left me with little to love. This movie had absolutely no redeeming value at all. What a waste of time and money! The acting was superb however. That's about it! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/15/2005A review of Dance with Me by rjennica1 With ballroom dancing getting more exposure to the general public via movies like this and the more recent movie, "Shall We Dance?" with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez, this movie sets the dancing spirit in all of us on fire. It has great dancing numbers, an official ballroom competition, REAL professional ballroom dancers, great cinematography and a beautiful love-family story to boot. And now ABC has a reality show to showcase ballroom dancing. The present day craze for Salsa, I believe is the result of this 7 year old movie. Salsa is such a sensual dance with so many unique moves which can be interpreted in countless different ways without losing its latin flavor or beat. It's the only dance which really shows off the woman's hips in full ball and socket travel as well as her femininity. A girl is really a girl when she dances salsa. It makes her feel like a real woman and so will this movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In |
