K Reeves in one of his best performances to date. In fact all the actors in this movie are good during their on screen time. The plot is not that complicated at all. This movie comes out ogf the gate full bore and about ten minutes in....you realize that something is very wrong.
I'd love to see what they left on the cutting room floor. This movie could have easily went on for fifteen more minutes. The only gripe i have about the movie is that the prsence of Hugh Laurie was a bit distracting, he has become stereo typed by his "House" characterzation that the last thing the Director should have done was introduce his character in a hospital. Sure fast cars have replaced the horses, but this flick is a reel live old fashioned shoot-em-up.
Paul Walker is great as a low level mobster who has screwed up by not getting rid of a gun used to kill a cop and all hell breaks loose. This guy is wired and has to get the gun back fast. Like most movies in this genre everything that could go wrong for the characters does, however a hell of a lot goes right. Children play a big role in this flick but its not for the kids. Fast paced and action packed this movie delivers what most male adults go to the movie for, guilty testosterone pleasures. This is definitely not a chick flick but a modern day western full of cowboys. I see where others ( rightfully so) compare this to Tarantino but I was reminded of an unedited full blown version of the Shield on steroids. Lets face it folks most movies they make today arent worth the price of admission but this one is. It what you go to the movies for. Was this review helpful? This movie probably more than any other except for Crash has a truthful resonance to it. We come to believe in these characters and what they do on film because we have seen or experienced this before. I was often reminded of Sam Peckinpahs films Bring Me The head of Alfredo Garcia and Pat Garret and Billy The Kid because of the way that Tommy Lee Jones lets his characters develope without clumsy dialogue or rehashed stereotypical catch phrases. This movie is good for the soul because it reveals human beings as they really are. An excellent film. I have never seen better use of a coffee pot in any film. Bravo ! Was this review helpful? Like the proverbial Phoneix Rising, these guys have never sounded better. This collection of hit songs and B sides from their Psychedelic era are a constant reminder to "all" who "hear" that these guys were the epitome of singing groups. David Ruffin's trademark vocals were swiftly being replaced by the gospel wail of new singer Dennis Edwards and the steady influence of producers/writers Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. Attention was finally being paid to all the Temptations vocal strengths most notably Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and Melvin Franklin. Do yourself a favor and buy this 2-fer CD set. Some of these songs have long been out of print and unavailable except on record. Standouts are Smiling Faces, Law of The Land, Cant Get next 2 You, Message to A Black man and Hum Along and Dance (aint no words to this song) Yeah the Temptations were parading their blackness all over the nation and they were preaching revolution and political correctness through their renditions of hell fire songs like Ball of Confusion and Law of The Land. Truth be told these songs are as relevent today as the day The Tempts made them. Think about it........The impossible task is to figure out which of the smiles is a mask ? Was this review helpful?
