Posted: 9/27/2006A review of Harder...Faster by 69SuperBee440
I bought this way back when on 8-track as well before getting it on cassette. LOL Overall this is a pretty good album. The two tracks which received the most airplay at the time were I Like To Rock and Say Hello. They are also two of my favorite April Wine songs. The ending to I Like To Rock has two guitars dueling, one playing the riff to the Beatles Day Tripper, the other running through the Stones Satisfaction. Two other songs I like are Before the Dawn and 21st Century Schizoid Man. If you dont have this in your collection, buy it. Laura, Im in the central Texas area as well. Too bad the Stones are charging a few hundred bucks to listen to them at Zilker, although Ive seen them twice before. Dan

Posted: 9/8/2006A review of METAMORPHOSIS [Remastered] by 69SuperBee440
I bought this back in 1976, on 8-track no less. This is a collection that probably only true Stones fans will care to buy. However, I feel it is underrated by those who have either purchased or listened to it. This version of Memo from Turner, while full of mistakes, would have been a better choice than the one released on the Performance soundtrack. It sounds more nasty and urgent here. It just requires some clean up and polishing. Two likable songs are I Dont Know Why and If You Let Me. Bill Wyman gets one of his own on here with Downtown Suzie. My favorites are Dont Lie To Me, Jiving Sister Fanny and Im Going Down. These three are good rockers. Im Going Down couldve been a contender for singles release had it been refined. Thats my personal opinion, but it has a great riff to it, plus a terrific sax in the background. In some respects it reminds me of Satisfaction and Jumpin Jack Flash. One has to wonder how many tracks Brian Jones actually played on before being fired by the band. If youre a Stones fan, add it to your collection.

Posted: 8/25/2006A review of Candy-O by 69SuperBee440
The summer of 1979 was a good time for music and this was one of the reasons why. Candy-O is my favorite Cars album. It has the Classic Rock staple Lets Go which everyone instantly recognizes. It has other cuts that occasionally make it on the air, but ought to be played more often. Two in particular are Since I Held You and Its All I Can Do. They have a pop flavor with a tinge of alternative added. The album does have some silliness with the title track Candy-O, Double Life and Lust For Kicks. Dangerous Type was a favorite as well for fans of the Cars. Overall it doesnt quite have the edge of their debut album, but it is an excellent followup. Plus you cant help but admire the Vargas girl on the cover. -)

Posted: 8/23/2006A review of Hi Infidelity by 69SuperBee440
REO gets slammed because of this album, but primarily for two reasons Keep On Loving You and Take It On the Run. These two staples of Classic Rock and Easy Listening radio have been played ad nauseum. Unfortunately this factor completely overshadows the rest of the album. There are power pop rockers such as Someone Tonight, Follow My Heart, Out of Season and Dont Let Him Go. Some humor is displayed at the beginning of Tough Guys with an excerpt from a Little Rascals episode whereby Spanky questions Alfalfa about his commitment to the He-Man Woman Haters Club. A pause, then it breaks into Gary Richraths guitar work, which to me is REOs trademark. Their previous album Nine Lives put them more into the mainstream, Hi Infidelity would be considered their breakout album for the masses. But due to the success of Loving You and Take It on the Run, afterwards they seemed bent on playing ballads for airplay. No instrumental experimentation such as Flying Turkey Trot or harder rockers such as On the Road Again or Riding the Storm Out. Thats unfortunate, because those are the types of songs many REO fans remember them for. In any case, the work is solid here with simple but effective lead guitar licks, good harmonies and songwriting input from practically the entire group. Despite what disparaging remarks you may have heard about this album or REO, pick it up. Also look at Nine Lives, You Can Tune a Piano, But You Cant Tuna Fish and A Decade of Rock n Roll 1970 to 1980.

Posted: 8/16/2006A review of Back in Black by 69SuperBee440
AC-DC bounced back with a vengeance after the death of Bon Scott. The selection of Brian Johnson was outstanding, as his vocals add a hard driving edge to each of the songs. No offense to any Scott fans, but I dont think he wouldve delivered the punch the way Johnson does here. There is no weak song on this album. I was a freshman in college when this hit the airwaves, and needless to say it was played often and LOUD at every party I went to. DJs at clubs would almost let an entire album side play before moving onto another song. Remember, this was when vinyl was still around. -) It was and still is that solid. Back in Black and You Shook Me All Night Long are staples of Classic Rock radio. My two personal favorites are Hells Bells and Shoot to Thrill. If you want an example of how Rock n Roll was derived from the Blues, Back in Black is an excellent place to start. You cant go wrong with this one. Get in your car, put the CD in crank it up!

Posted: 5/17/2006A review of Diamond Dogs by 69SuperBee440
This was the first David Bowie album I listened to from beginning to end. On 8-track tape no less! Im not a big fan of his, but I do enjoy this offering. The best songs on here are Diamond Dogs, Rebel Rebel 1984. Rebel Rebel has become a staple of Classic Rock radio. The spoken intro Future Legend has one of the best lines Ive ever heard This aint Rock n Roll, this is...genocide!. Then it breaks into Diamond Dogs. The riffs on these songs drive extremely well. The rest of the album isnt overwhelming, but is worth listening to. If you want to experience Bowie before he became more mainstream Pop, pick this one up.

Posted: 5/17/2006A review of Don't Look Back by 69SuperBee440
After they debuted with their explosive self-titled album Boston, a followup with the same caliber would be tough at best to accomplish. While not as impressive as Boston, Dont Look Back doesnt disappoint. The title track and Party are rockers as is the often overlooked Feelin Satisfied(my favorite song from the album). The ballad A Man Ill Never Be is solid and incorporates their famous sound in the lead work. A sentimental favorite is Used to Bad News. Its not as driving as the other songs, but is a good tune nonetheless. I was in high school when Boston hit the charts was lucky enough to catch them on the Dont Look Back tour(Ive seen them twice since then). Disco music was monopolizing the airwaves, and Punk-Alternative was starting to make serious inroads. For true rockers, we appreciated artists like Boston, Kansas, Van Halen, Peter Frampton, Scorpions and Foreigner for providing some of the most memorable music of the 70s. Ok, enough of my digressing. Pick up Boston and Dont Look Back, youll enjoy what you hear.

Posted: 1/21/2006A review of Katrina & the Waves by 69SuperBee440
This album came out while I was stationed in Biloxi. Needless to say, it was played at some of our parites, particularly Red Wine and Whiskey. Now for some irony...New Orleans was only an hour away from the base, so myself some buddies made several trips there on the weekends. Flash forward to 2005. After Hurricane Katrina hit the city, I was called up with my Air National Guard unit to provide relief. While patrolling the Tulane Medical Center, there was a sandwich shop called the Milk Bar across the street. A window was boarded up with a sheet of plywood. One of the medical students with a macabre sense of humor wrote on it Appearing one night only, Katrina and the Waves. Lyrics to Walking on Sunshine followed. Sorry for digressing. Ok, this is a fun pop album good for dancing at a party.

The two songs nobody ever mentions are the title track Escape and Stone in Love. Stone in Love lets Neil Schon show off his guitar work, plus the bass lines of Ross Valory come through clearly. If youre on a date, have this CD ready to play! -) Dan

Thats pretty much it for this album. I like the song. The rest of the album, save for the two Stones covers, isnt very strong or impressive.

Head East was pretty much a one-hit wonder with Never Been Any Reason, but it is one of the most instantly recognizable songs on the airwaves. It combines good rhythm, synthesizer driving beat that you can also dance to. That is if you wanted to. Jefftown Creek is another song with a heavy riff to it. Lots of good bass which you can actually feel. A few other decent songs are Love Me Tonight and City of Gold. Add this to your 70s collection.

Another heavy dose of power pop. The song Ah Leah! is what drives this album. The rest of the album isnt bad, but Leah showcases Iriss vocals with some heavy rhythm guitar along with driving leads. If you grew up in the late 70s or early 80s, or just a fan of the genre, add this one to your collection.

Posted: 1/21/2006A review of Making Movies by 69SuperBee440
Making Movies may not have had the impact of Dire Straits first album or Brothers In Arms, but its a good effort nonetheless. Mark Knopfler is able to showcase his finger picking style, particularly at the end of Tunnel of Love and Skateaway. Too often when Skateaway is played on the radio, DJs will wind up cutting off about the last 15-20 seconds of the song, which has some nice looping lead work. Expresso Love and Solid Rock are not only good riffs, but John Illsleys bass work comes through cleanly. I believe this is the last album that drummer Pick Withers did with the band before leaving. If youre a Dire Straits fan, I suggest you pick this up.

Posted: 1/21/2006A review of Watts in a Tank by 69SuperBee440
The guitar work of Sausalito Summer Night is reminiscent of Steve Millers Jet Airliner, but these guys take it a step further. This is pure power pop the lead work is comparable to anything put out at the time(Think Donnie Iriss Ah Leah ). I bought Watts In a Tank when it was first released in 1981. I nearly wore out the cassette while driving back forth between South Texas DFW. All aboard!!!
