Posted: 12/1/2003A review of Kill Bill Vol. 1 by thedoorsfan187
Tarantino never disappoints. Every one of his movies are great. Gone in this movie are the pop culture references. Now it's just action, blood, and more blood. And Uma Thurman gives probably her best performance yet. She plays the Bride (her name is bleeped out, but we'll hear it in Vol. 2) who's out for revenge on the people who left her for dead. She in a coma several years, and awakens to find out something... sick. Okay, I don't wanna give away a lot. But this movie is not for the squeamish. There's a lotta blood. And it's also very funny. While watching the movie, it was like watching all of those cheap old Chinese flicks. I don't know how to exactly describe them, so just watch it and find out what I mean. Anyhow, another great movie, it's the best movie I've seen so far this year, and... it's just f**kin' awesome.

Posted: 7/19/2004A review of Wish You Were Here by thedoorsfan187
Though the album only has five songs, it runs as long as their previous album "Dark Side of the Moon." But as everyone should know, this is an album soley dedicated to the band's former frontman, Syd Barrett. The band never directly refers to him, but you can interpret that they are from their lyrics and perhaps even the song titles, too. And I think that's what makes this album kinda sad. Syd was only with the band for their debut album and part of their second, then was booted out for "going nuts" by using drugs excessively. The band pays their tribute to him, making sure no one forgets, and probably making sure everyone knows the band hadn't forgotten about their former frontman. And the album comes off stunning with their opening epic "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (pt. 1-5)." Brilliant guitar solos and musically, it's damn brilliant. Well, music is what makes up most of this album. The melodic sounds and sonic textures are all damn good. Pink Floyd are at their best musically and, in my opinion, they never topped it. And let's not forget the lyrics that speak of Syd. The band seems a bit down and maybe regretful, and they probably did even more so when a surprise guest came unexpectedly while they were recording... and that guest was Syd Barrett himself. I'm guessing that visit made the band do a few changes and made the album what it is: A thoughtful tribute and a damn great album. And like their debut "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn," you may also wonder how the band might've been had Syd Barrett not succumb to drugs.

Posted: 7/15/2004A review of The Doors by thedoorsfan187
Psychadelic rock became the greatest thing of 1967. The Beatles bested themselves (and everything else) with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," Pink Floyd debuted with the haunting "Piper at the Gates of Dawn," and the Velvet Underground shocked audiences with their debut "The Velvet Underground and Nico." Then comes in the Doors when they release their self-titled debut amidst those other three grand albums. In my opinion, this albums combines everything the other three albums had. The great and beautiful music of the Beatles, the eerie and yet melodic keyboard music of Pink Floyd, and delivered the shock value and poetry of the Velvet Underground. And like those albums, the Doors delivered psychadelic rock. But they're weren't just psychadelic, nor were they delivering "poppy" tracks. The Doors were a sraight-up rock band. You hear that pure rock sound in tracks like "Break On Through" and "Back Door Man." Now THAT's the sound nowhere to be found in the other three albums. Jim has the screeching vocals rock stars these days use regularly. That's what distinguishes this album from the rest at the time. Jim wasn't just a poet... he was a rock star. But the album isn't just Jim. Ray Manzarek steals the show with his excellent keyboard pieces. Ray is the heart of the Doors. Without him... who knows what the band would've done. Robbie wasn't like other guitarists of his time. His pieces were... strange. Though he wasn't like Robert Plant, he was unique. He stood on his own. John, like every drummer, kept the rhythm steady, and he too stands on his own. He'll sound like a typical drummer, but on "The End" it sounds as if a Native American has taken over John and made him sound as if he's beating the drums of war. Each member's talent and mixing rock with Jazz and Blues makes it even better. This is truly an essential album, and one of rock's all-time finest albums made. It also makes this reviewer's all-time favorite album.

The Doors deliver probably their best album (I'm still deciding on which is their best: This one or their debut) and gives us a bluesy sound that's been seen on "Morrison Hotel" but they top it with this one. This is jammed pack with great songs and there's not a single one I dare to skip. But now the Doors have driven away a bit from their psychadelic roots and just delivers a good ol' rock n'roll album. And now, Jim is drunk but his voice isn't the sensual and seductive voice girls loved. His voice is worn and craggy, but it fits so well with this album. His voice may be weary, but he still manages to give us more stories to hear one last time. Sometimes, he'll be angry (Been Down So Long), but most of the time, he just seems to be having fun. The final track, "Riders on the Storm," is the one song Jim seems to be serious on. He knows his time is up, and he delivers his trademark poetic, disturbing, and prophetic story... nothing like he's done since "The End" on the band's first album. From psychadelic, to experimenting with brass, and ending with blues, the Doors changed quite a bit with their short years of being a band. And their music continues to be remembered for generations to come.

Posted: 6/8/2004A review of Nevermind by thedoorsfan187
By most people's opinions and certain magazine's polls or whatever, Nirvana's "Nevermind" is considered the greatest grunge album of all time. I haven't any clue as to which album or other band's album will hold that title, but for now, I'm gonna agree. In Pearl Jam's "Ten" review, I called that one the greatest grunge album. Well... upon hearing this album once again, I think I'm gonna change that as well. "Nevermind" was the album to bring grunge and alternative to the mainstream. The video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" showed what grunge was all about. Catchy tracks one after another. Rarely does an album have that. You buy "Nevermind" and hear what Kurt must be feeling, whether it'd be anger, passionate (well... maybe not very much), and sad, like in the last track "Something in the Way." Now the band kinda takes the sound away from the metallic tones of "Bleach" and they give us a more punk feel to this one. Certainly the band's near best achievement and one of rock's all-time greatest albums. If you happened to grab this album with the hidden track "Endless, Nameless"... well, you've certainly grabbed the best one.

Posted: 4/22/2004A review of Scream by thedoorsfan187
Scream is an unusual "horror" movie. As you all know by now, it's a satire of other horror flicks. Whether intended to be funny (and it is), it's still pretty damn scary and gruesome. All the ingredients for a horror flick, right? Neve Campbell (who plays Sidney) could most likely have been the new Scream Queen for the '90s. (In case you don't know your horror history, Jamie Lee Curtis is the original Scream Queen.) And this was definately the horror film of the '90s. It spawned two mediocre and unnecessary sequels, both of which are okay but they don't add up to the terrifying (and oft-humorous) tone of its original masterpiece. I hope Wes Craven makes a big come back once again in the future because, man... there aren't many horror films out there that comes to being scary as his movies. So anyway, I think most of youse know the plotline for this flick so there's no need for me to go into drastic details, but just in case: Man in spooky mask runs around killing random horny and hot teenagers. The young kids know they're supposedly in a horror film type setting so they "abide" by its "rules." End. Is it good? Yes, it is. Is it great? Umm... this being MY review, I think it's destined to rank up there with the horror/slasher classics like "Halloween." Although Neve Campbell gives a great performance, I must hand it to the bad girl Rose McGowan. Oh my God, never before had I laid eyes on such a gorgeous, beautiful, hot, talented, and incredibly sexy woman! Rose, I think you're the HOTTEST woman out there, next to Keira Knightley!... Sorry... Rose clouded my mind there. Anyway, watch this movie for some great scares.

Posted: 1/29/2004A review of Lost Dogs by thedoorsfan187
Pearl Jam's Lost Dogs is, as you all know, a collection of B-sides, but this has got to be the best collection of rarities released. Spanning on two discs, the band has pulled out not just a bunch of songs, but songs they think are the best. It spans from their entire career, cuts from just about every album they've released over the years. And the sound goes from hard rocking music to slow, soft, and kinda dark sound. This is a must-have for fans of Pearl Jam and people just getting into Pearl Jam. For some of youse complaining that Pearl Jam hadn't released an album like "Ten," this is as close as you'll get to it. Personally, I think this is the best album they've released. Good job for Pearl Jam!

Posted: 1/26/2004A review of Aenima by thedoorsfan187
I'm am so pissed off at Stephen Thomas Erlewine's negative views on this album. This is the same guy that said Britney's self-titled album is the best teen pop album ever (next to Mandy Moore's self-titled album). If he doesn't appreciate alternative metal (or art or prog metal), then he should just fist himself while looking at Britney pictures. Anyways, just wanted to get that off my shoulder.<br>Tool's Ænima is a masterpiece that clocks in at nearly 80 minutes. Not every song is the same. Each tell a different story that can discourage some, open their eyes to something that hasn't been given hard thinking, maybe give you a little chuckle, perhaps even offend some. And Maynard's voice is just amazing. Lyrics and music are so well put together I haven't heard anything like this since the '60s or '70s. This album truly ranks up with the classics such as Dark Side of the Moon and Led Zeppelin IV. If you thought Nevermind, Ten, or Superunknown were the best of the '90s, you haven't heard anything yet.

Posted: 12/22/2003A review of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by thedoorsfan187
In this time of crappy movies, Peter Jackson has brought real movie magic to us finally, starting with The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. Now, with The Two Towers, he's outdone himself. This is absolutely spectacular. In my opinion, this is the best installment of the trilogy (note: I've seen The Return of the King). Jaw-dropping special-effects that'll make George Lucas sweat. Although the first sorta rushed through the characters a little bit, this one improves on the character development. And... since every other reviewer on here basically told the story, I won't go into details. My only grudge is that there's hardly any Cate Blanchette and Liv Tyler scenes. Two great actresses that get overshadowed by the others. But that would probably slow down the movie. Anywho, I'll make this short. Great movie. Should've gotten a lil' bit more recognition at the Oscars.

Posted: 12/1/2003A review of Bad Santa by thedoorsfan187
Hmm.... I don't see why people hate this movie so much. I thought Billy Bob Thornton played a great role, which seems like it's his best so far. Yes, it's a dark comedy, which seems a lot better than the other comedies that have been released this year. This is most likely the best comedy I've seen this year. It has a lot of funny moments, then at times, it can be a little sweet, and sad. All the stuff that's in a dark comedy, right? Overall, I loved this movie. Do not be fooled by its title and take your kid to this movie. Look at the rating. It's 'R'! Anywho, great movie, great actors, and... it's just great.

1 out of 2 users found this helpful  surprisingly good!
Just watching the previews before the movie was released, I was expecting this movie to sink. It didn't look too interesting. Seeing that this was a Disney movie kinda got me worried. I kinda expected a flop like "Cutthroat Island." Since my girlfriend really wanted to see it since it had Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, I just decided to give it a shot. Now, after watching the movie, I was just in awe. I didn't expect this movie to be this GOOD! Plenty of action, very humorous, and all movie stars give great performances. Of course, Johnny was fantastic. He always gives a great performance. Orlando wasn't half bad either. Geoffrey Rush still manages to pull off great playing the villan. The beautiful, no... make that HOT, Keira Knightley also wowed me. Seeing her for the first time, I was just like, "Oh my God. I've never seen a woman this beautiful!" Now I can't wait for the DVD to come out. And seeing that many critics hated its long length (about 2 and a half hours), I didn't have any complaints. Overall, great action, funny, and just... great. One of the best movies I've seen this year.

At first, I didn't think that Elf would be very good and funny. Will Ferrell never disappoints. He always finds a way to make us laugh. And this movie is probably the best holiday movie this year. Nothing else like it.

Posted: 12/2/2003A review of Fight Club by thedoorsfan187
My name may say how much I appreciate this film. One of those rare movies that most critics hate, but then later is praised as a good, or great, film. Before watching this movie, I just expected a lotta guys beating the crap outta each other, but I was dead wrong. It's much more than that. The movie comes from the novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk, a nihilist. I haven't read the book yet... anywho, this is about a depressed insomniac whose only treatment to get any sleep is to go to group help conventions, cry, then go home and sleep like a baby. This is just a sad, depressing, and disturbing movie, and also humorous in a twisted kind of way. Edward Norton really gives probably his best performance ever as this man whose name we don't know (in the credits, he's only "Narrator"). And Brad Pitt also plays very good as Tyler Durden. Once they team up and create a fight club, things kinda get a little chaotic... but I ain't about to give it away. Watch this movie. You'll cringe and laugh. David Fincher's nearly best movie, but Se7en is still his best.

Posted: 12/1/2003A review of A Walk to Remember by thedoorsfan187
Okay, I'm a guy. I may like action, war, thrillers more than this kind of movie. But after watching it for the first time, this was a movie that made me cry. Rarely has a movie done that to me. And it still does! I thought it'd be the usual, cheap-ass teen movies we've been getting, but this one stands out from the rest. This movie just made me think that I should always be there for my girlfriend. Ya never know when something bad'll happen. Anywho, Mandy Moore gives a great performance. Seriously, I didn't think she'd pull it off. And Shane West also does a great job. Overall, I really loved this movie. It made me cry (okay, I'm a wuss, sue me), and really opened my eyes. The only one thing that ruined this movie for me was when one of my friends opened her mouth and told me what happens to Mandy's character. Anywho, great movie.

Posted: 12/1/2003A review of Hannibal by thedoorsfan187
This is one of the most disturbing movies I've seen. But it was good. Anthony Hopkins still managed to play the madman very well. I was kinda bummed that Jodie Foster wasn't Clarice this time. But Julianne pulled it off. Both gave great performances, including Ray Liotta.
