The acting was great. I can't believe I am saying this but Johnny Depp was hilarious and I can't imagine anyone else playing that part. Kept me totally entertained and I will be buying it on DVD when it comes out. I recommend it highly. Was this review helpful? I, of course was one of very few adults there without children, and was amazed at how quiet all the children were - they loved it! So did I. HOWEVER, I do have a gripe. Why must Disney, and Pixar, insist on killing of family members in the first few minutes of EVERY movie?? What kind of message does this send. Did Walt Disney have something against his mother? Not only was the mother killed off in the movie, but a brother as well. Brings to mind Bambi, Finding Nemo, and the list goes on and on..... Was this review helpful? I thought it was funny in a cute, family way. A good rental. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/13/2003A review of Dreamcatcher by FireLover11 I would like to read the book, as from what I understand the book was a lot better than the movie version. Unfortunately, I have never been able to make it through a S.K book - something about his writing style. The movie was okay, but it seemed very rushed. I am sure there is much more in the book that would have made the movie better, but they were not able to include everything. Worth a rental, but don't have too high of expectations. I like that it was more of a psychological thriller than a horror movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 11/13/2003A review of 28 Days Later by FireLover11 The movie had a good plot, but just couldn't deliver. It felt very superficial and left a lot of important detail out. I felt like the movie just presented ideas and then quickly glossed over them, although they were quick to beat us over the head with the story behind the infection. They should have spent less time rehashing the same explanation and developed some of the other plot lines more, such as (SPOILER) the idea that the infection was not world wide and they were actually quarantined, rebuilding, the experimentation on the monkeys, etc.
Overall, very poorly done and very disappointing. Glad I waited for the rental. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 11/13/2003A review of Under the Tuscan Sun by FireLover11 I absolutely loved this movie. I saw it with my mom when she came out to visit, and we are now talking about planning a trip to Tuscany. Even if you don't like the plot, etc., of the movie, the scenery is amazing. I did like the plot a lot. I liked how in the end she got all that she expected, just not in the way she expected it. I highly recommend this movie. Was this review helpful? I love Eugene Levy, and he really was hilarious as the guy in love with Queen. To address the reviewer below who didn't like the movie because of its "racist" comedy - the point of the movie, at least in my and all my friends view, was to make fun of that type of thinking. You see someone say that and think, oh my god, they did not just say that. You recognize it as a stereotype and laugh at how stupid and ignorant it sounds. Don't go looking for racisim where there isn't any. People need to learn to laugh at themselves. At the very least, the movie was an equal opportunity offender - the "white guys" did not get off easy either. I recommend it. Very funny. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/13/2003A review of Scarecrow Slayer by FireLover11 Oh my god. That is all I can say. Think of every bad special effect you have ever seen, every movie cliche used throughout history, and add the worst plot and acting possible and you have this movie. It was the only horror movie left at the store on Halloween, so we succombed and rented it. It should have been in the comedy section, or better yet, NEVER EVEN MADE. Please don't waste your time or the 99 cents. SO not worth it. This movie was the reason for the phrase "thats two hours of my life I will never get back." Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 11/13/2003A review of Finding Nemo by FireLover11 I loved this movie! The animation was amazing, as expected and I just loved Dori, the fish with horrible short term memory problems! Highly recommended and I am sure I will be buying it on DVD. However, as I recently said in a review of Brother Bear (yes, I am 27 and see every animated movie out!!) I don't quite understand why every animated picture (Bambi, Brother Bear, Finding Nemo, Land Before Time, etc.) all have to kill off either a mother or an important family member in the first few minutes of every movie. It is depressing. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/13/2003A review of Anger Management by FireLover11 I was afraid this would be a typical Adam Sandler movie where you see the funniest parts in the trailer and the rest is just annoying, but I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone does a great job acting, and it was really nice to see Marisa Tomei in something again. Good movie and I recommend renting it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 7/29/2003A review of Legally Blonde by FireLover11 So I was proven wrong - I resisted seeing this movie for a very long time. I am a female attorney and deal with male attorneys every day that think all woman attorneys are stupid and must have slept with someone to get through law school, much less get a job, so the idea of a ditzy flake getting into Harvard law, etc., really ticked me off. BUT - it was so over the top it was hilarious The acting was great and I loved the dog! I would highly recommend it and I feel stupid for being on such a high horse about not seeing it! I can't wait to see the sequel. Was this review helpful? Sign In 4 out of 5 users found this helpful Posted: 8/21/2003A review of Seabiscuit by FireLover11 I don't know where to begin! Of course, I cried like everyone else. The acting was amazing - I think they all deserve awards. I thought the film-makers did a great job at setting up the film in the first 20 minutes or so - you got to know the characters and what drove them, you got a feel for the era, and why the story of this horse was so powerful. A very well made movie and a true story that people are not likely to forget. I hope to see this movie again in the theatre and will definitely own it when it comes out on DVD. I know everyone has their own tastes, opinions, etc and I hate it when other people say this, but I actually feel it for the first time - how could anyone not love this movie???? It is a feel good movie which manages to appeal to both men and woman, is very entertaining, and does it all without graphic violence, sex or profanity. Now, everyone has to admit, THAT is nothing short of a Hollywood miracle! Please see this - you won't regret it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 7/29/2003A review of Solaris by FireLover11 First off, I have to express my disappointment at those who wrote reviews on this film, not to actually review the film, but to take the opportunity to voice their opinions on how "stupid" americans are, etc. Let me fill you in on something, all you pseudo-intellectuals - merely raising a couple "deep philosophical issues" does not make a movie intellectual. Anyone with a book on philosophy can ask those questions (which is what many of those reviews look like, by the way. You can put your college texts down now...) I have a doctoral degree and am by no means stupid, but I think in order for a film to be "intellectual", it should explore those philosophical issues - not just present them. This movie looked to me like it was made by a few people who wanted to look smart, but didn't actually have the intellect to back it up. I like a movie to make me think, but not in the same way a basic level textbook on philosphy would. Try some character development, some actual thought on the issues raised. I also believe a hallmark of true intellect is a person's ability to present issues in such a way that people can follow them and participate. I am not stupid, but if you want to teach me advanced physics, etc., you better understand it well enough to discuss it on a lower level. While I understood what was trying to be relayed in this movie, it is apparent that many didn't - even though they tried. And I am sure the majority of its viewers are not actually stupid. Simply because you manage to half 3/4 of your audience walk out confused does not mean you have created a genius work of art.
Overall, a film worth renting - if nothing else than to make up your own mind about its plot and "deeper meaning." I am not a big Leo fan, but found myself very entertained by this movie. He did a great job. The fact that it is based on a true person adds a lot to the movie - it is amazing what he got away with! This is the first Leo movie I would highly recommend to others. Very fast paced and entertaining, and managed some decent character development as well. Was this review helpful? It is a hard movie to describe. All I know is I haven't had a movie hold my attention like that for quite a while. Highly recommended. Was this review helpful? Sign In |
