Though the movie was well produced, it kept missing the mark with the character development. The meat was there to make a really good, thought provoking movie, but it missed. Still, well produced and very watchable. And don't get wrapped around the axel that this movie was taking place in Nigeria, even if Nigeria isn't experiencing the chaos that was depicted in the film. There's a boatload of other countries all over the world where this type of social-political upheaval is playing out. So the underlaying/background premise of the movie is very believeable. The combat scenes are very good and tense/exciting, the action is good and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Gods and Generals does a wonderful job portraying Civil War characters as we probably wouldn't have come to know them otherwise. It's obvious the ";critics"; don't get it, as they were probably hoping that G&G would be akin to Shanghi Knights with Owen Wilson enfusing 21st century attitude and lingo into a 19th century setting and/or Pvt Ryan type gore in the battle scenes. The point of the movie isn't high action and constant battle (unlike Gettysburg which focused on one, defining battle), G&G develops characters over a longer period of time and presents points of view from various key figures in the war. Does the movie sway more and give more time towards the Southern view? Yes, but it's a view that generally needs more attention across Americans, anyway, to better understand where the Southern folks were coming from in their zeal to secede from the Union. The telling of Thomas Jackson's story was great, though it could have spent a little more time developing the story of his generalship, so to give more creedence as to why General Lee ";lost his right hand";.

One of the rare times when the sequel is better than the first. I'm biased towards comic book super heros, but that shouldn't matter ;-) If you like the genre, action movies, and the escapism of sci-fi, then beat a hasty path to your local theater before it's gone.

Posted: 6/17/2003A review of Hulk by Anonymous
I'm writing this with not yet having seen the movie (only trailers), but I'll be back.As for whether the HULK looks fake or fearsome, this shouldn't even be an issue. It's a comic book super hero "coming to life" on the big screen with all the latest AGI mastery (anybody remember the Saturday morning TV cartoon Hulk of the 60's?). I'm going to go see this movie because; I'm a movie buff, super hero buff, comics buff, Hulk buff, etc... Given my druthers, I'd much rather watch the 'human' Bruce Banner transfrom into a good computer generated visual graphic, than have a human trapse around in a HULK suit/make-up (no dissing Lou Ferrigno - but, I like the bigger/bader AGI HULK). It's a cartoon. I like cartoons. There's nothing 'fake' about a cartoon.

A good movie, but lacking in it's inventiveness. Since this trilogy was shot all at the sametime, each successive release needs to have an element that grabs you which makes it better than the previous release. This one didn't. I guess the biggest ";new"; thing to this movie was the use of Gollum. The character was good in terms of using the latest/greatest special fx, but that is also the movie's downfall. Having a human in mega-makeup and using great stunt fx (Spiderman, Daredevil, Matrix) would have taken this over over-the-top and made it worth while. But having the 'fake' interaction with the live charatcters puts this film on a level with ";Roger Rabbit";. The one really bogus fx is the 'dummy' Gimli strapped on to Legolas as they ride to Rohan. The Helm's Deep scenes were good, but the whole thing was overplayed - no need to make a movie 3+ hours long just for the sake of making it long. I even had a buddy of mine state that this movie compares with the great war movies - huh???? I not going to a Tolkien movie to watch war scenes. But then again, along with a few other misplaced scenes and characters, the movie is and has, detracted from the book storylines. This trilogy could have been one of the great movies, forever. But it spends too much time on certain events that don't need the time they're given. If the movie(s) would spend the extra time covering and keeping to the actual storylines, then all would be fine. I, then, wouldn't mind sitting for 4 hours.

Takes the C Reeves "Superman" movies to the next level! Jack is GREAT!! Wish he didn't die, a sequel with the Joker would be just as good. Keep the super heros coming to the big screen!

Michelle Pfeiffer is HOT! And that costume......!Anyway, more great super hero stuff. Good to see a mix of villains to keep the movie fresh. I love how the Batman movies give a good account of how the villains became who they are. Almost gives a "documentary" feel to the movie; and for those exploring the genre for the first time, gets them up-to-speed on the storyline/history of the comicbook characters.

Not only was the movie very good, I applaud the minimal use of gratutious sex and violence. Even as a PG-13, I'd take my 11 year old to go see it (or when it comes out in rental). Nothing over-the-top in terms of storyline, but a very watchable movie that moves nicely through the different sequences.

Keep the Marvel heros coming!! I'm a glutton for this stuff. Spidey does his thing with lots of action eye-candy fighting against a great movie-friendly villian. Maguire keeps 'Peter Parker' true to form and DaFoe is one of the best 'bad guys' of the current generation and does a marvel-ous job (no pun intended). Can't wait for someone to bring The Fantastic Four to the big screen. This movie proves beyond a doubt (and probably when HULK is released), that a good mix of graphics and real life fx can bring new life to any and all the super heros.

Over the top cast of premium stars kept this movie afloat. Lots of mini-stories and character interaction that kept the movie interesting - a good thing.

If you're a war movie addict, this is a MUST SEE. Especially with the flare of 'based on a true story' aspect. This docu-drama hits all the buttons and emotions that you look for in a movie. I wouldn't say that it's Gibson's 'best' performance, but the story, direction, cinematography, etc... really makes this a great 'movie' to watch.
