Posted: 5/2/2003A review of X2: X-Men United by Dakhoth
In the realm of cinema it has been noted by many that one of two things is absolute when it comes to sequels. They are either despicable dreck that no man should be subjected to, or they outshine the original by leaps and bounds. Fortunately for all of us X2: X-Men United falls into the latter category.Despite the current listing of ";Best Comic Movies"; here on MSN having the original film in the low end of the top ten, this offering of X-Men lore should top the next listing. X2 has a story that is more Claremont-esque for those of you in the know. Comic fans will not only see situations that they will find intimately familiar but will also be able to pick out many of their beloved characters on sight without the power signature clues. Although a certain red-headed Scottish girl is an easy pick pre-power display, the added thrill for fans is the actual use of her abilities.Of course the movie still has it's errors with introduction, and lineage for some characters, as did it's predecessor, but they are easily overlooked even by the most jaded of comic afficianados. Were these errors absent a 4 1/2 star movie would be a 5.Dialogue shows marked improvement and the actors seem to be more comfortable with the characters that they are attempting to portray to watchful fans. The power displays seem less gratuitous with the exception of some characters that play it fast and loose as a part of their personality. In addition, there are several incidents of brief focus on certain favorite characters that open the door for many sequels to come.Warning to all girlfriends being dragged along for the ride there will be a shock for you in the 11th hour. For X-Men fans you will be expecting it.

Where can I begin to tell you about how badly this movie was slapped together? Michael Keaton as Batman? Alfred the butler letting folks into the Batcave willy nilly? Or maybe I should just start with the re-writing of a classic literary character.

Batman(the movie)was filled with action, trash talking during fight scenes, and more testosterone than a night out at the local biker bar. This in and of itself is what made the money for the movie. The money came from the "action film crowd."

Michael Keaton was the worst possible choice for Batman, despite the fact that he looked like Batman in the costume. But then again, who wouldn't in that costume, when your musculature is built into the suit. Keaton(as Bruce Wayne) surely didn't look like he had spent years honing his body for combat.

Throwing into the story that it was the Joker that killed Batman's parents was an attempt to tie it all together for the "action crowd" (people that couldn't pin the tail on the donkey with the blindfold off). It re-wrote Batman's origin right there. Joey Chill killed Thomas and Martha Wayne people, not Jack Napier.

This and many other little things killed this movie about a literary character than has almost as much history as Tom Saywer(anybody notice that the man who would be Two-Face was played by a black man? With respect to Billy Dee Williams, Harvey Dent is white).

All in all if you are looking for an action film, any action film will do. If you are looking for a comic book hero movie, rent Superman.
How in the world did you come to the conclusion that this is one of the best comic movies of all time? I, myself am a great fan of ";B"; movies, but this movie was as cheesy, if not more so than the Batman series with Adam West. It is movies like this one that made comic buying, and collecting laughable by the majority of the populace. Not only should this not be on the best comic movies of all time list, there is no way it should be this high up on the list.On a personal note, just including a movie that involved the treasonous Jane Fonda is reprehensible. Her place in American culture is as a traitor to the American soldier, not as an actress, great or otherwise.
