It certainly didn't deserve to win Best Picture. The musical sequences were the highlight of the film. Any other parts where the characters had to speak their lines were dreary and dull. Renee Zellweger was woefully miscast. But John C. Reilly has a surprisingly nice singing voice. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2003A review of Red Dragon by KGGibbons83 Anthony Hopkins looks very bored at his third go round playing Hannibal. I can't get past the disparity of pairing Edward Norton with Hopkins. We are supposed to believe that Norton's character caught Lector. Norton, whose bleached blond hair makes him look more boyish than ever, looks like a scared pupil of Lector. I cannot believe that this brilliant psychopath was outsmarted by Norton's character. I also found that the villian in the film, Fienne's Dolarhyde, was completely benign. I was not scard of him in the least. He didn't seem like a threat, so it made Norton's search for him seem rather pointless. While the film is, on the surface, borderline decent, if you go past the facade, you see many holes in the story. Perhaps I would've liked it better had I not seen the superior adaptation of the novel, "Manhunter." "Red Dragon" pales in comparison to "Manhunter." I know that many people point out that "Red Dragon" stayed truer to Harris' novel, but it's important to remember what works best on the page does not always work best on the screen, and I think that "Manhunter" was a tighter package of a movie. See "Manhunter." Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2003A review of Waiting for Guffman by KGGibbons83 This movie is fantastically creative. I was in stitches. Christopher Guest's Corky St. Clair is, like his other characters in his mockumentaries, confident and clueless. My favorite line: "I hate you and I hate your ass face!" I knew I'd never see anything as clever or as hilarious again. This is, hands down, the funniest movie ever made. The adorably clueless band stumbles through the picture, gallantly playing to half-packed houses as their drummers die and their manager lies to them, while they are served bread that is too small for the meat. This "mockumentary" was made long before any VH1 "Behind the Music" special chronicled the outrageous antics of any "real" bands. And it's spot on. Buy the DVD and listen to the commentary in which the actors bash the film in character. It's fabulous. Was this review helpful? The real conflict of the film is Will's (William Petersen)tenuous grasp on his sanity as he tracks a killer who is about to strike while dealing with a killer who he has already caught. While Brian Cox's Lecktor will draw comparisons to Anthony Hopkin's version in subsequent movies, Cox plays the psychopath as a real threat -- a murderer who will kill. Hopkins is brilliant as well, but I always felt that his Lector was like an animal who would strike only of thouroughly provoked. We see Cox and Petersen as equals on different sides of the fence, with little separating them other than Petersen's Graham's knowledge of right and wrong. This thriller is one of the best. The dramatic camera angles, the lighting, the acting, and the story all mesh perfectly to form a movie that shows the desperate situation in post-War Europe. Completely wonderful. In this hilarious movie, any plot gets in the way. The real funny stuff lies in the quirks of the two main characters, whose stupidity is displayed in their every action. See this movie for a good time, and enjoy the little things -- like the furry boots Jim Carrey wears while walking up stairs to a hotel in a tiny scene. Funny stuff. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2003A review of Enough by KGGibbons83 This movie was so bad. It's been done to death and on Lifetime. The character's were miscast, and everything about it was cliche. Was this review helpful? Every time it tries to be cool or relevent or different, it's too obvious. And the ending is out of left field, though not in a good way, but a "I could care less" way. Bad, bad movie. A waste. Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2003A review of Moulin Rouge by KGGibbons83 This movies is wonderfully executed, with everything in sync and nothing missing a beat. Unlike many romantic movies of today, the chemistry of the two main characters is palpable, and you really believe they are in love. Jim Broadbent should've won the Oscar for this film rather than "Iris," he was so great. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor sing and dance beautifully during this ride of a movie. The two main characters, Bialy and Bloom, complement each other so well as they work to produce the worst play ever written. Hilarious from start to finish. Was this review helpful?
