My son, who is white, attended Wilson HS during this time period. He needed to quickly figure out how to navigate the school grounds both interior and exterior to minimize unwanted run ins with certain factions. He had friends from every walk of life and race. We did run into department heads and counselors who pigeoned holed and there was very little to be done to change their minds. This was an excelllent portrayal of a cameo of existance for a certain group of kids who have never been exposed to any other way of living or thinking. We new kids who had NEVER been outside of Long Beach and are fearful of venturing out. Hollywood did get it right. If you have the money, even in Long Beach, you can insulate yourself from anything. That mother who intends to send her elementary child to Wilson will, no doubt, have him attend the separate academy located in a separate building on the campus. They even wear uniforms.
