Woody Harrelson has maybe 10 minutes of screen time, but he adds a lot. I love long movies when there's something necessary to the story on screen, but this could have been pared back a good 15 minutes. My one major irritation is how biblical terms are thrown around in movies like this. (Armegeddon being another example). "It's the Rapture - end of days!" The other clunker was "The Mayans predicted this!" Jeez - I guess movies like this depend on the ignorance of their audience. Take it was a grain of salt and check your mind at the door. The kids are really good in this. Was this review helpful? The critics will always find something to pick at, but this is a beautifully-acted story. It wasn't gimmicky or overly sweet and I think that's partly due to Sandra Bullock's performance. You can totally believe that Tim McGraw and Sandra Bullock are a happilly-married couple. Quinton Aaron is fantastic as Michael - his eyes alone can break your heart. Well worth the ticket price and the packed theater. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/16/2009A review of Pirate Radio by Hotcha_Cha I really liked it. From the trailers, my husband was expecting more interaction between the broadcasters and the authorities trying to shut them down, but he walked out satisfied. I really didn't notice any shakey camera. As for characters being over the top, I can see that, but I can't imagine the people this is based on were too much different. The djs had a huge fanbase. As for performances, I just loved Bill Nighy. That guy can play anybody and I'd believe it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/9/2009A review of Disney's A Christmas Carol by Hotcha_Cha Jim Carrey evokes a pretty strong response. Either you love him or can't stand him. I feel this Christmas Carol is above average, mostly because it is truer to the novel than the previous films. You show people a bit more of the grittier bits of the novel and they can't believe it's the same story. I have to agree the voice of Christmas Past was a bit unsatisfactory and Christmas Present's persistent laugh gets tiring. But the terror Scrooge is feeling seems more real. There's just one nagging question for me. It seems the main reason Scrooge changed his attitude is because Christmas Yet-To-Be showed him he was going to die that day much more than anything to do with saving Tiny Tim. You know there'll be a sequel I'm usually not into the horror genre, but when I saw the trailers for this, I just had to see it. Pretty frickin cool. I actually shrieked when the clown popped up from under the bathroom stall door. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 9/30/2009A review of Surrogates by Hotcha_Cha This was better than I expected it to be. I'm still haunted by Rosamund Pike's performance - you can actually feel her grief over losing her son. Strong cast and great story. This didn't feel campy like a lot of Bruce Willis vehicles. Not much else to say. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 9/10/2009A review of 9 by Hotcha_Cha I don't understand these professional film critics. They give Extract a high review and 9 a less than average?! I've seen both and disagree strongly with both reviews. Animation doesn't necessarily mean kid-friendly and this story is a bit dark, but I really enjoyed it. The detail is exquisite. My one issue, about the 30th time something jumps out at you, I was a little over it. But the story is there. The plot is there, it just isnt all that complicated and doesn't have to be. I was really impressed with Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, and John C. Reilly. They really added something special that I don't think just anybody could have, unlike a lot of celebrity voices in animation. If you can handle movies that aren't all sunshine and roses, I think you'll like this one. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 9/8/2009A review of Extract by Hotcha_Cha I am so disappointed. I thought comedy meant funny. This was more sarcastic than anything. How can professional film critics call this smart comedy? Half of it is stoner humor. Jason Bateman is good and the guy that plays Nate the overbearing neighbor is funny, but the rest of Extract is a mess. You're given no reason to care about Suzie and no explanation for why Joel and Suzie, who seem to care about each other, only have relations once every couple of months. What? I never would have guessed that the guy playing Step is also Ayel in Star Trek. He did alright with what he was given, but this was nowhere as good as Office Space, which I still love. Wow - Gamer is visual acid, but in a fun way. So much better than Crank High Voltage. My only quibble is with the whole weak female who needs to be rescued plotline. Other than that, this movie has the correct runtime for what it is, doesn't take itself too seriously, and is a lot of fun. Michael C. Hall has the eyes of a sociopath, doesn't he? But he's the reason this movie works. And Gerard Butler is super hot. Now, for all that's holy, stop using the completely ridiculous whine about losing time you'll never get back if you didn't like it. Nobody forced you to go watch a movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 8/24/2009A review of Inglourious Basterds by Hotcha_Cha Mixed feelings on this one. Brad Pitt was pretty good as a unsophisticated remorseless killer. I liked the way the opening scene at the kitchen table unfolded in a real-time kind of way between LaPaditte and Col. Landa. The guy playing Landa was pretty darn good. But there were times when this style of dialogue development in a scene grew weary. I was like "Get to the point, already!" several times during the movie. I didn't expect it to drag in places like it did. This was more about Shoshanna getting revenge than the Basterds the movie is named for. Kinda bait and switch, but ok as a story. It felt strange watching what amounted to Jewish suicide bombers in a movie theater killing indiscriminately. It's evil if its muslims, but okay if its NAT-zis who are dieing? I can't quite make that leap. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 8/15/2009A review of District 9 by Hotcha_Cha I was floored - D9 has a "The Office" vibe to it, but with a lot more intelligence. Fantastic story, computer graphics that enhance the story instead of clubbing the viewer over the head, action, drama, humor, and horror are all in this 2 hour movie. I can't get over Sharlto Copley's performance as Wikus. He's so much better than these Hollywood hunks we're forced to endure (Channing Tatum, that's for you, hon.) They made this for 30 million?! Well done, gentlemen! I'm a happy, happy viewer. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 8/10/2009A review of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra by Hotcha_Cha Well, this didn't stink as bad as Transformers 2. It was okay and overall great popcorn action. The CG was fantastic and there was enough story to keep me interested. Channing Tatum's lines dudded on occasion, but it wasn't fatal to the movie. Sienna Miller was better than I expected her to be and she's way hotter as a dark brunette than as a blonde. It was strange how this GI Joe tried to back away from the American emphasis, but the studio is going for a global box office, not just the domestic take, so I kinda see why it was done this way. My one big issue with this movie is the Brit playing an American president - he didn't even try to ease up on the accent, and the non-ending. I knew this was a sequel movie, but couldn't they find a more specific way to end this? Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 8/10/2009A review of Julie & Julia by Hotcha_Cha I like how this movie was executed - you get a feel for how Julia found her way to cooking, as well as Julie's execution of her book idea. The acting was top notch. Streep and Tucci together in Paris, again (Devil Wears Prada). Stanley is so sweet, but not sugary and Streep does Child without turning it into a Dan Aykroyd-style imitation. My only question is, did Child dis Julie as it was suggested toward the end of the movie? BTW, my husband also liked this movie and I didn't have to twist his arm to go see it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 7/29/2009A review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by Hotcha_Cha There's a very good reason why the Dursley's were written out of the movie. The guy that plays Mr. Dursley didn't want to play the part any more, according to a movie news story that came out about a year ago. I don't know how that will effect the last movie, seeing as there's a rather important scene involving the last time Harry sees those awful people. Anyway, I loved the book and I rather liked the movie. It was tamed down a bit to ease up on the violence, but overall, this sets up the tone for the last movie in a very real and heartfelt way. Liberties were taken with the storyline, but overall, you get the gist of the book. Relax, book snobs - it is fiction afterall. Was this review helpful? What you have is a doucheb@g running around trying to make everyone as uncomfortable as possible - not exactly a hero for gay rights. The joke is on anyone who actually bought tickets to see this.
