It has the prerequisite true story background, the racial and economic tensions with some twists, and several blood-soaked children (cause thats what they are, even if theyre gang members). While some of the characters were a bit one-dimensional, like the obstructionist department head, for the most part it was truly believable and real with well-acted roles.
I graduated high school the same year in which the movie begins. The fantastic soundtrack took me back to what things were like in the world at that time, and it wasnt pretty (there was an race-based riot at my high school in 1994 12 police cars were required to quell it). My 8-year-old daughter saw the movie with me, and at one point she leaned over to me and said in a loud whisper, Its a good thing thats not how things are anymore, mommy. It was a great teachable moment, because our districts high school is much like the one in the movie.
The bottom line is that this was a great movie. The theater where I saw it was packed with viewers of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds. I wasnt the only one crying. When the movie was over, applause erupted.

Not being a particular fan of gore, I was still looking forward to seeing this movie for several reasons. The first was the novelty of seeing a movie entirely in a somewhat-obscure native dialect. Secondly, I thought that the scenery and costumes would be great. Third, I thought that it could actually be a good movie. While the novelty of the dialect and the costumes were great, the rest was just awful. Being a fan of historical fiction, I was terribly disappointed by the myriad historical inaccuracies (other reviewers have covered this point). The jungle chase scene went on far, far too long. WAY too long. We nearly walked out the movie about two hours into it. We were THAT bored. I had such high hopes for this movie! If you like lots of gore, youll love this movie. If you like a little good filmmaking with your gore, its a disappointment. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-2 of 2 Per Page |
