To say that I was very impressed is an understatement, I was in awe, of the writing, the acting, and the directing. The message of how hate is a never ending cycle that gets the hater no where was incredible. The came full circle so completely, which is rare. The entire cast did a wonderful job, especially Edward Norton. This movie very easily could have come across as being pro-racist, but everything was done so well, that only someone already very pro-racist would have had such limited vison to see only that aspect of the story. Danny's father was the quite kind of person that everyone knows someone like, with his subtle type of racial slurs. We often shrug off people like that and don't really pay very much attention to them or the fact that they are racist, but they lay the groundwork for and perpeuate the beliefs of the more overt type. I couldn't exactly put to words the message that I got from the movie until I took an Old Testament class in college and the professor (also a Baptist preacher) said in a discussion that no matter who we hate or how much we hate them, or why, holding that hate in our hearts only hurts us. Which wasn't 100% true for the characters in this movie, they did hurt others, their own families, the families of the people that they killed, but that hatred hurt them as well. The writers/directors were not afraid to bring to light that racism runs both ways as well. This is admirable. Many people would have only shown the one side of it. I like that there was no favortism to either side. The only movie that I have ever seen with a more conflicted central character so filled with hate was The Beliver. This movie is the most startling visual arguement for peaceful coexistance, if nothing else, I have ever seen. On a lighter note, I have never seen Edward Norton look better. Was this review helpful?
