Instead I waited until after the Oscar's and rented this movie along with Training Day. As a young african american female, I wanted to watch both of these movies and find out exactly what all the histeria was about and just how good were these movies that Denzel and Halle were able to sweep the Oscars. There are a few words that describe Monster's Ball in all its glory: Piece of Crap. This is the worst thing I've seen in a long time. The whole movie *($@ed. Halle portrayed a "white man's whore." Those are not my words, but I've heard several people use that term towards her role in that movie. Rumor has it that Angela Bassett was originally offered that role but she would not accept it because it was degrading. Everyone says Halle won the Oscar because she played "outside her normal role." Let's look back at her career. Halle has always been either a drug addict or ghetto girl. The only difference is that in this movie she has a southern accent. I was very disappointed in her performance and this movie. The movie *($@ed in general. That was the worst ending ever. I will say however that after winning an Oscar, she has been offered other roles and hey, she was even a Bond girl. As far as her winning an Oscar and it being a landmark in black history for being a nicotine addicted, alcoholic whore, I'll pass. Plus she's mixed, so it doesn't count for us anyway.
