It is not a thriller in that sense. It is simply an interesting film that explores human nature in extreme circumstances.

As in most of M. Night Shyamalan's films, there is the obligatory twist, which is evident in The Village about half-way though the movie. But the fact that the viewer knows this twist takes nothing away from the real thrill of this movie--the performance of Bryce Dallas Howard--Ron Howard's daughter. She is spectacular and carries this film. She was outstanding. Was this review helpful? However, I did go into this new movie with the understanding that it would never be as shocking and horrific and as well done as the orginal. Keeping that attitude, I was not disappointed.

The story is intriguing and some of the scenes are as intellectually spooky as in the orginal. It also makes homage to some of the better lines and scenes in the orginal. (Quite a nice surprise.) It kept my interest and I enjoyed watching Merrin's character unfold a bit. There is a nicely done twist at the end and a fairly scary end sequence.

This movie's weakness is that it does rely heavily on unimaginative tricks to make it scary: gore, loud noises to induce jumping and poorly executed CGI.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie and I'm glad I was able to see it on the big screen. It was certainly not as good as the original, but it was entertaining nonetheless. Was this review helpful? For some reason, this movie keeps the interest, in part because it is exceptionally well-acted and in part because the viewer keeps hoping this movie will have some sort of point. The cinematography is captivating and the actors do a superior job of making a lifeless script seem almost meaningful. Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray enjoy a fascinating on screen chemistry despite the fact that the movie has no real story line. Basically, I'm glad I saw this movie, but I'm not sure why. The best thing I can say about this movie is the set design--I'm convinced they might have used real snow to make it look cold. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-4 of 4 Per Page |
