The lack of characterisation arguably tightens the grip on you as you accompany Depp on the mysterious journey.

However by the end of the second third, you are yearning to understand where it is headed, and require some more basic story information and explanations as to the history and meaning of the books, what the pictures actually stand for, and what happens to you once you go through the The Ninth Gate.

Watching the DVD with commentary doesn't help either. In the final few chapters Polanski does little more than babble on about technical aspects of the film, perhaps trying to detract from the fact it was hurriedly finished.

All in all, The Ninth Gate is comparable with 'The Final Conflict: Omen III': after a premise filled with such anticipation, you are left somewhat unfulfilled. Save for the special effects which show signs of dating, the genre-hybridity, the acting and the music are the greatest accomplishments of this film.

It's funny in the right places (Bill Murray and Rick Moranis notably), mockingly sentimental in the right places (Bill Murray), sexy in the right places (Sigourney Weaver), and actually downright scary (well, it is about ghosts isn't it!)

The music provides the effective juxtaposition between the comedy and the scary feeling. The best track after the title theme is 'Magic' by Mick Smiley.

My all-time favourite film. Was this review helpful? For fans of the series, it is an important film.

But for goodness sake, what does Damien actually do that is so profoundly and fundamentally evil. Sure, there's a bit of fighting going on in the middle east, and he murders a few babies in an attempt to destroy the second coming of Christ, but where's the final battle of armageddon? Where are the four horesemen of the apocalypse I ask you? This film could have been an epic biblical tale. Too much was left unexplored. The film's only salvation is the image of Christ at the end when Damien is destroyed. Shame, he seemed a nice enough guy. (!) Was this review helpful? This film is so underrated! It's fantastic!

There are so many things that go on relevant to all of us:

The trauma of moving house...
The trauma of your eldest daughter announcing she's getting married to a stranger...
The trauma of living next door to a complete psycho...
The trauma of losing your job, etc etc...

And the fact it all happens to Richard Pryor makes the audience feel so much more comfortable with their lot at the end, and you've had a great laugh along the way!
