The only thing I noticed was that the kids were definately too OLD for their parts, especially the kid that plays Harry Potter. They probably should have filmed all the movies back to back.. After spending a summer in the russian countryside as a child - some many things were so familiar - the old log cabins thatsometimes still serve as dachas, the wide open spaces, the green lushness of summer foliage. And then you have the storyline which is so alien, brutal and almost beyond understanding. Yet - parts of the story are also familiar; [like] how humor can exist in anywhere. This is one of those movies that you don't know if you liked it until the end - but somehow I felt compelled to see the end (and I am notorious for abandoning slow films.) There's a lot of symbolism - and I don't really go for that sort of art film type stuff but it was still an engaging film. Was this review helpful? Unfortunately too many of these classic films have been poorly maintained - and Way Down East is no exception. While still watchable, much of W. D. Griffith's dramatic effect is lost - due to film degradation. Still - a interesting film, and Lillian Gish is adorable. A nice look at the styles, and fashions of 1919- 1920. Quite a few flappers in the early scenes. Was this review helpful? Suspending disbelief does not come easily - even for people who are able to whole-heartedly fall into OTHER movies of this type. Too little of true human nature (such as simple curiousity) exists in the characters of this film.. Blind obedience seems to dominate the inhabitants of this community, even the children - and I find that difficult to believe. Small (and fairly large)inconsistancies through out the film give away the "big surprise" early on in the film to anyone with remote knowledge of history.. To be fair, my husband gives not a fig about history (other than the season records of his favorite sports teams and it took him longer to figure out the "twist." And he too, was disappointed by the advertising campaign promoting this as a "scary" movie. Truth in advertising wouldn't have hurt this film - but less people would have been disappointed.. (I would have still seen it had it been billed as a 'suspense" film.. Of course, I still would have been disappointed, since the plot seemed a bit weak. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful This movie is great because it's just plain fun! A silly tale of the love and romance of a modern day career woman..
Clara Bow's luminous, and charming nature shines through this silent film to grab modern day audiences. (Even my husband who: a. hates silent moveis b. really doesn't like B & W c. has disdain for most non-action or non gore films - watched this with me, without complaining.
He described it perfectly, "after a few minutes watching "It" - I forgot it was a silent movie!" and "Clara Bow just looks like she'd be a cool girl to hang around with!" He couldn't believe it when I told him a bit about her life - (which has some tragic elements) and that to me - shows true acting ability - to be able to affect people, 80 years later, and engage them in your story.. I mean, no surprise that I loved this movie - I love old movies, I love silent movies, I love the 20's.. But that he liked it, and other people I know (who are of a similar modern bent as he is) enjoyed as much as I did.. well - that's a great movie.. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-6 of 6 Per Page |
