I have never rated a movie at one star, but this was a stinker. The cast is great and manufactures a dozen funny moments out of this horrible script. I was hoping for a cute rip off of History of the World, Part 1. What I got was something that everyone should avoid at all costs. Was this review helpful? While the movie is a bit more action oriented than past installments, it is anything but mindless. Abrams successfully melds modern film conventions with the classic Star Trek concept, resulting in a movie that can be enjoyed by all but the most close-minded purists. Was this review helpful? By taking the most popular mutant and teaming him up with never before seen characters, the film avoids the staleness that plagued The Last Stand. However, the origin of Wolverine is a very touchy subject with hardcore comic fans that the new movie tends to rewrite and over explain. That said, the action scenes in the movie are kick-ass, the cast is pitch-perfect, and the story is engaging (even if it has a couple of unnecessary twists). Even with its shortcomings, Wolverine is as good a film as any in the series and will soon sit next to them in my DVD (or Blu-Ray) collection. Was this review helpful? The relationship between the two main characters is surprisingly sweet and psychologically sophisticated. Although their entire lives are based on deception, they yearn to love and trust each other. The story keeps you guessing until the very end. I was able to eat a meal and still follow the story, but some viewers might benefit from repeat viewings on DVD. If you have a date with a smart girl, this is the movie to see. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/16/2008A review of Quantum of Solace by John_Q_Cineplex The new film in the James Bond series has many things going in its favor. Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever (that's right, I said it). The film also has some great locales and set pieces. Unfortunately, the action sequences are unwatchable. There are too many cuts, and what could have been exciting becomes nauseating. The plot in this type of movie will always take a back seat to the action. Smoothly directed stunt sequences are Hollywood's bread and butter, and there are countless filmmakers who are capable of producing them. So where did they find the idiots who ruined this film?! Seriously, guys... not cool. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 8/30/2008A review of Wanted by John_Q_Cineplex I went into this movie with low expectations, but I must say that I enjoyed it immensely. Sure the stunts are ridiculous, but the first sequence is pure adrenaline! What really sets Wanted apart, though, are its story and themes. I have never read the graphic novel, but now I have to check it out. I'm glad I took a chance on this one. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 8/30/2008A review of Step Brothers by John_Q_Cineplex Hands down, the funniest movie of the year. Vulgar? Yes, very. Probably too many F-bombs to be a classic, but this movie made me laugh until I cried. I actually went to see it again the next day. Think Billy Madison squared. This is what happens when you let comedians just be funny. There is even a little sophisticated humor and emotion. Mostly, though, it's just a guilty pleasure with a solid climax. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 8/30/2008A review of The Dark Knight by John_Q_Cineplex There's not much to say about this film that hasn't already been said, and with 200+ reviews already posted I doubt anyone will read this. Still, like the rest of you, I am compelled to express my opinion concerning the Dark Knight phenomenon. It has been weeks since I saw the film, but it is still with me. Although flawed, it combined so many different aspects of cinema, drama, and iconography in a new way that it truly became more than the sum of its parts. Naturally, Ledger's performance is the highlight of the film, but it does not exist in a vacuum. The context (and lack thereof) provided by the other elements of the film result in a piece of pop art that is deeply affecting. The sheer number of reviews on this site is a testament to this, and anyone who denies the importance of this film has no real awareness. 4.999 stars Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 7/14/2008A review of Get Smart by John_Q_Cineplex Good, but not great. Steve Carrell makes a mediocre script very funny most of the time. Other times, it drags horribly. This movie is weakest when it moralizes or makes allusions to the TV series. I did appreciate the way they made Agent 86... well... smart, instead of completely inept. I will see this one again... on DVD. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 7/14/2008A review of Hancock by John_Q_Cineplex While far from a perfect movie, I have to give this one full marks for originality. In this golden age of CGI, where all it takes to make a successful summer blockbuster is to throw a rock through your local comic book store's window, we are treated to Hancock. In truth, this is two very different movies in a very slick package. Most critics love the first part, which introduces our hero and his shortcomings. Some prefer the second half, which has more gravity, but more holes in the plot. I say, why not have your cake and eat it too? The whole point of this movie is to see Hancock shift from a foul-mouthed drunk into a true superhero. Smith portrays Hancock's duality in an effortless and epic way which speaks to all of us who have struggled our own dark sides. This film is very funny, although some times in the most vulgar ways, and the final confrontation makes no real sense. Still, any movie that gives me crazy dreams is worth reviewing, and I plan to see it again! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-11 of 11 Per Page |
