Posted: 1/9/2006A review of Hostel by Azrael19791
Hostel is gritty, twisted, and VERY disturbing. Hostel is NOT a slasher flick. Anybody who looking for a conventional horror movie need look elsewhere. Anyone interested in seeing Hostel should first consider asking yourself this question. Are you squeamish in any way shape or form? If your answer is yes, then dont go see Hostel. A strong stomach is a MUST if you plan on seeing Hostel. There are scenes in Hostel that are very hard to watch, but the graphic nature of this film sets the stage for an eye-opening experience. I think that all but the most hardcore movie-goers will actually like and recommend Hostel, but i think everyone should see this movie, especially if they are ever planning on back-packing through a foreign country. Compelling plot and great special effects makes Hostel my must see pick for the year.

Posted: 11/8/2005A review of Serenity by Azrael19791
In my opinion, Serenity did for cinema what it would have done for television, if the series had not met a quick demise. And it gave me hope that original, compelling stories can still be made. Based on the Fox show Firefly, Serenity packs almost an entire seasons worth of story and adventure, wrapped neatly into a two hour package. No prior knowledge of the series is needed to follow the movie. (It reiterates stuff from the TV show as a nod to the fans) And Serenitys biggest strength are with the story and character development. Even the villian of the movie is hard to dislike. Creator Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel fame) gave me everything I was expecting of a big budget Hollywood film in spades. There is plenty of action, comedy, drama, and suspense. And, like all Whedon projects, everything is broken down to where the audience can connect with the characters and actually care when things go bad for them. I strongly urge moviegoers to see Serenity. It has all the ingredients for what makes movies worth the price of admission. The best film I have seen this year. Bar none.
