And the script was weaker as well - could have been more. It was a great idea this remake, but most of the actors were not cast well in their roles. The chemistry was flawed, the relationships not credible - I couldn't even see these women being friends, and how exactly did that happen? Here's how I would have cast it - Jean Tripplehorn or Rachel Weisz replacing Meg Ryan, Marcia Gay Harden or Helen Hunt replacing Annette Bening, Camryn Manheim or Kristen Johnston in Debra Messing's role and I would leave Jada Pinkett Smith and Eva Mendes in their roles - they were the only roles that seemed to fit the characters.
That being said, I still enjoyed watching these women play out their roles - not because I liked the roles, but because I liked them - so, all in all it was worth seeing, but I think it's simply worth waiting for the movie to come to Netflix. This was pure dumb blond, but it had me laughing all the way through - not a bad way to spend an afternoon. I really got a kick out of it. Now just to put this in perspective for you, I read the classics, love Jane Austen, Bronte, and love great filmmaking - and I do like to laugh and lighten up a little from time to time. This was just the ticket. Was this review helpful? Production values aren't worth a hoot in this roaring musical (which is the only musical I have ever liked). The music is light and fun, the stars are wonderful to see stretching and flexing their musical personas (some squeaking by but who the heck cares), the scenery is just wonderful, and good heavens, it has a happy ending - what else on earth could you want? Necessity breeds daring as she takes a leap of courage and finds herself in the home of a would-be employer, a deliciously ambitious tartlet or did I mean starlet, well never mind because you know what I mean (played by the specialist of this kind of lightheaded beauty, Amy Adams). It's only one day that they spend together, but what a day - makeover, juggling boyfriends, plotting to win a juicy role and willing to do anything, true love, and the ex-boyfriend. I loved this film, it is light, charming, the decor of 1930's is utterly exquisite, the music just great and it made for a great afternoon of entertainment. As my friend emailed me just the other day, she wants to be the redhead, and I'll be Pettigrew - I would love to do that! Was this review helpful? In fact, there was one woman across the way who way laughing so hard I wanted to go sit with her - shes the kinda gal Id like to be friends with. These days life is just too damn serious - and this was a great relief. It is true that this film isnt perfect or written and acted like a great film classic - its life on the lighter side and it was totally great fun. And Bill Macy was such a great shmoo you couldnt help but love him. Ive told everyone I know to go have a laugh and see this, and to leave the critic at home. Was this review helpful? For the first time in many years I have seen a film that took me in as an innocent child. I loved every moment, every character. And the greatest treat was seeing the (fictionalized) story of the birth and first breaths of one of the world's greatest childhood tales. I am going back again this weekend. What a great holiday film for all - it reminds me of all the past holidays when I so looked forward to special films- Wizard of Oz, Miracle on 34th St., It's a Wonderful Life. It's just simply wonderful. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-6 of 6 Per Page |
