This movie has energy, movement, good cheography, some good music (for a musical), a cast that's enviable--Streep does a stellar job singing--but ... though filmed in a Greek island, not one word of Greek (which wasn't necessary) is spoken, and the Greek landscape is somewhat wasted. This could have been filmed in ... Bermuda, or the other side of the moon. You will probably like the the energy, but its total lack of plot will eventually bore you. Not much to take home. Plaudits to Tom Hanks and Rita Wislon forthe money, but their "Fat Greek Wedding" did have some lamb and ouzo in it. Mamma Mia!

Nia Vardalos won American audiences win MBFGW, but she may not be as lucky with this one. That was about a cultural clashes, a popular subject. This one trashes a motley bunch touring in Greece, some Americans included. She loses her "kefi" (Greek for joie de vivre) but a wizened, widowed American, Richard Dreyfus, playing a male Pythia at Delphi restores it when he points out that she lacks a love interest. When that is provided by a bushy bus driver who turns a Greek god when coifed and shaved. Good shots of ruins, and an electrifying one of the lighted Parthenon at the end. Enjoy it for what it is.

I watched nearly all the original shows, and even more shows the TV re-runs until they ran out of them. Set in real beautiful Hawaii, with wonderful leads, gripping stories, and the incomparable final line (a usual joke in the Jonny Carson Show--which increased its popularity), Book him, Danno!) this is one of the best Tv shows ever. It is violent (but not nauseatingly so), fast, witty (when it needs to), and socially relevant--the hoods alway got their nemesis. Glad contemporary audiences seem to enjoy it to.
