Wonderful, touching story. Sean Penn gives an extraordinary performance which prooves even more that he is one of the great method actors of modern cinema. In an age of movies where acting is almost secondary, it's great to see a true actor at work.

Posted: 10/18/2002A review of Halloween by OU812steve
Halloween proves that it doesn't necessarily take a big budget to make an excellent film. This movie does exactly what it aims to do...SCARE YOU!! You are always wondering where Michael Myers is and a lot of the time you can't see him. That is the genius of this film. I have never heard anyone say it is a ";cheesy"; horror flick...it isn't. Excellent plot and screenplay, Halloween keeps you scared and on the edge of your seat the whole movie. The musical score is one of the most effective in the history of film... an excellent marriage of movie and music. One word...CREEPY!! See this film.

Top marks for this adaptation of David Mamet's famous play. Stellar performances all around from a big-time cast and great directing from Jim Foley. Great cameo appearance from Alec Baldwin. This movie is packed with stress and tension...probably what a lot of sales offices are like. Excellent dialogue with very harsh language that seems to fit the screenplay very well. Many memorable lines from this movie, i.e., ";Coffee is for closers only!";. Five stars and a must see.

Posted: 12/4/2002A review of The Man With the Golden Gun by OU812steve
While not the best Bond film objectively, it is my favorite. I think it's because the villian, Scaramanga, is so cool and because it has my favorite Bond girl, Goodnight. Good plot, great action, and two great main characters this is a good addition to the series. It does however have two corny inclusions...Scaramanga's flying car and sheriff J.W. Pepper. I think we could have done without them. All in all a must see. Good theme song too!

I always like Director's Cuts of films because it shows what that person had in mind initially without the interference of budget or time constraints. If you are to own Apocalypse Now, make it "Redux". It's the only way to fly.

Posted: 10/18/2002A review of Heat by OU812steve
Excellent movie, top-notch cast and acting, and great story-line make this a must see. It has one of the greatest getaway scenes ever filmed. The best scene, however, is at the very end when Hanna (Pacino) is chasing McCauley (DeNiro) and a realization is discovered...that both have a kinship towards each other and are, in fact, the same person on different sides of the law. Excellent development. This film is one of my favorites and I recommend it highly.

Posted: 10/16/2002A review of The English Patient by OU812steve
I saw this film in the theatre and I vowed never to see it again. It was 3 hours of agonizing tortuous boredom. It was very difficult to stay focused on the plot (?) because the dialogue was so uninteresting. You're basically asking yourself throughout the movie ";who cares?"; It was way too long and drawn out and the story could have been told in 1 hour, not 3. Being someone who loves movies and pays attention to a lot of things in a film, I can certainly appreciate the production of the film (I'm sure it was enormous) and the acting of Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, and Willem Dafoe. Their talents can be used in an interesting film and not The English Patient. I can't believe it won 9 Academy Awards. I guess it goes to prove that movies today are really hurting for material and talent.

Posted: 4/2/2003A review of Rocky by OU812steve
No film captures the essence of America like ";Rocky";. This is NOT a film about boxing, rather, its a film about an American boxer, who is very poor, that gets the ";chance of a lifetime"; to better himself and siezes it. Its such an inspirational movie and really proves why the USA is the greatest place on earth. Dynamite performances all the way around from Stallone to Spinnell. Remarkable screenplay. In my opinion, one of the greatest movies ever made.

Posted: 3/8/2003A review of Carlito's Way by OU812steve
Oh, this ranks up there with the great films of all time. Dynamite screenplay and superb performances from Pacino and Penn make Carlito's Way a muscle car of a movie. I have to give this performance as Al's best (Scarface a VERY close 2nd) and one of DePalma's signature efforts. Excellent cameo from John Leguizamo (Benny Blanco...from the Bronx)as well. A must own DVD for film afficionados.

Well I'm sure everyone who looks this movie up has seen it....you have, haven't you?? Anyway, it really is a first-rate comedy and has a million memorable lines, i.e., ";Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life";. Definitely worth seeing over and over again and worth having in the DVD collection. ";TOGA, TOGA, TOGA!!!";

Posted: 6/16/2003A review of The Pledge by OU812steve
This is one of Jack's most underrated roles and I can't understand why. The character he plays, Jerry Black, is a story's dream...so much depth and complexity and Nicholson pulls it off like the true pro he is. Great storyline and supporting roles as well. I truly believe that the general audience today would not know a good movie if it punched them in the face.

One of the best movies of one of the greatest movie decades - the 70's. One of the greatest character movies I've seen and every performance is spectacular. Nicholson was, of course, excellent, but I can't say enough about Louise Fletcher's portrayal of Nurse Ratched - wonderful. This movie is a must own for the film buff.

Posted: 3/27/2003A review of For Those About to Rock We Salute You by OU812steve
Extremely, extremely underrated album. The real fan will get past track #1 (which is great, don't get me wrong) and listen to the songs ";Let's get it up";, Evil Walks";, Snowballed"; and ";Spellbound"; in addition to the rest of the album. This is such a kick-ass rock and roll album with its thick, heavy, and dark sound. AC/DC's best and they've got some of the best ever. Turn it up!!!!

I really enjoy this movie and I always have. I grew up watching this movie and never get tired of it. It has a great "feel" to it...the cold, damp, gray, blue-collar atmosphere that just defines football. Great script and good acting from everyone, "All the Right Moves" is right on!

Posted: 10/16/2002A review of At Close Range by OU812steve
At Close Range truly is film-making at it's best. A very dark, serious drama this movie has everything. The screenplay, directing, acting, dialogue, cinematography, and even the music is done to perfection. This is by far Jim Foley at his best. The movie in a nutshell shows a very sad, even disturbing, portrayal of an American crime family specifically the relationship bewtween father and first-born son. It's based on the life of real-life killer Bruce Johnston, who died earlier this year in a Pennsylvania prison. Every actor in this movie is excellent from Sean Penn to Christopher Walken to Mary Stuart Masterson. I give it 5 stars and I certainly recommend this film to everyone including young film makers.
