Finally! It's been a long time since I've seen a movie with Eddie Murphy acting, not just playing Eddie Murphy. There were a few minutes when it felt like he slipped into Robin Williams territory, but during the dramatic moments, he nails it and it really got to me. Ruby Dee is heartbreaking. This movie is good for laughs and don't be surprised if a few tears develop. I usually see it coming, but this one snuck up on me.

I was a tad skeptical, but The Green Hornet was a better movie than I expected it to be. Christoph Waltz was brilliant as Chudnofski and a big thank you for Jay Chou as Kato, cuz even though Seth lost a lot of weight for the role, he's still playing a slightly repulsive bumbler. Jay is very easy on the eyes and it's nice to see at least a few competent characters in this movie. There were some good fight scenes, particularly between Kato and Brit, ending up in the pool. Funny, but not forced. Open-ended enough for a sequel without screaming "Look out, here comes the sequel!"

Who was this movie made for? Because it certainly wasn't made for anyone familiar with the animated series. Aang looked like Aang, but the bending looked silly, the acting was lousy, and there was no flow in action. It's not like we wanted a frame-by-frame match to the cartoon, but there's no humor and the characters are not at all like the animated characters in style or presence. My 15 year old is a huge Otaku and she could have made a better movie than this. I know there's no guarantee that you'll like a film, but to put this trainwreck out is very disappointing.

I like how this movie was executed - you get a feel for how Julia found her way to cooking, as well as Julie's execution of her book idea. The acting was top notch. Streep and Tucci together in Paris, again (Devil Wears Prada). Stanley is so sweet, but not sugary and Streep does Child without turning it into a Dan Aykroyd-style imitation. My only question is, did Child dis Julie as it was suggested toward the end of the movie? BTW, my husband also liked this movie and I didn't have to twist his arm to go see it.

If you're a 20 something guy, you'll love this movie. I am not in that group, so there you go. I blame my husband for this - it was his turn to pick the movie. I did laugh hysterically, especially with Dwight Yoakam, but I was so uncomfortable watching this thing. If I'd seen Crank 1, I'd have skipped this. It's basically a live action video game where you have no control over what's going on on the screen. I was almost embarrassed to be seen walking out of the theatre for this one. Female nudity doesn't bother me, but the only women in this thing were hookers or strippers. Although I did cheer when that skeletal asian chick got hit by a car.

Denzel Washington knows what he's doing, but the draw for me was Gary Oldman. Personally, I'd watch a hemorroid commercial if Gary Oldman was in it. The dude can act. I think the critics are a tad harsh. Trying not to give away any spoilers here. I like the big reveal toward the end, but I felt there was certain little things done that didn't quite fit. Mila Kunis as Solara actually does really well for what she's given. Post-apocolyptic movies aren't for everyone but I kinda dig it.

Posted: 11/9/2009A review of Disney's A Christmas Carol by MyNameGoesHere1
Jim Carrey evokes a pretty strong response. Either you love him or can't stand him. I feel this Christmas Carol is above average, mostly because it is truer to the novel than the previous films. You show people a bit more of the grittier bits of the novel and they can't believe it's the same story. I have to agree the voice of Christmas Past was a bit unsatisfactory and Christmas Present's persistent laugh gets tiring. But the terror Scrooge is feeling seems more real. There's just one nagging question for me. It seems the main reason Scrooge changed his attitude is because Christmas Yet-To-Be showed him he was going to die that day much more than anything to do with saving Tiny Tim.

I really liked the movie and I loved the soundtrack. There were a few things that detracted from 5 stars for me. Basically, the stepfather gets away with it. That kinda stinks. Scott Glenn looks like a burnout. Is he sick or something? I'm still not sure how his character is giving Baby Doll instructions for how to escape if it's all in her head. Even Carla Gugino's over-the-top Polish accent is forgiveable - at least she commits. But, these aren't fatal to the story. It was ambitious, the acting was really good, and the special effects were top drawer. I particularly liked the steampunk elements. Even the slow-motion action bits Zack likes to use were toned down a bit. Overall, this was a pretty good movie, even with it's flaws.

It isn't often I see a movie this good. The critics will always find something to pick at, but this is a beautifully-acted story. It wasn't gimmicky or overly sweet and I think that's partly due to Sandra Bullock's performance. You can totally believe that Tim McGraw and Sandra Bullock are a happilly-married couple. Quinton Aaron is fantastic as Michael - his eyes alone can break your heart. Well worth the ticket price and the packed theater.

Well, this didn't stink as bad as Transformers 2. It was okay and overall great popcorn action. The CG was fantastic and there was enough story to keep me interested. Channing Tatum's lines dudded on occasion, but it wasn't fatal to the movie. Sienna Miller was better than I expected her to be and she's way hotter as a dark brunette than as a blonde. It was strange how this GI Joe tried to back away from the American emphasis, but the studio is going for a global box office, not just the domestic take, so I kinda see why it was done this way. My one big issue with this movie is the Brit playing an American president - he didn't even try to ease up on the accent, and the non-ending. I knew this was a sequel movie, but couldn't they find a more specific way to end this?

I liked the fact that this didn't have a formulaic ending. Clive and Julia are fun to watch play off one another. You do have to pay attention. Paul and Tom (the CEOs) were perfect, funny, and vicious at the same time. Now, who are these whining jackasses who repeated bemoan the hours of their lives wasted that they'll never get back? Unless you were hog tied and forced to watch a movie you hated, take some frickin responsibility for your choices.

I wasn't expecting Shakespeare, so I wasn't disappointed. Anna Faris is sweet. I found her character endearing when she could smile even when her feelings were hurt. But, that Carrie Ann chick lurking around with the guy voice completely made me ill. Maybe some people found her funny, but it didn't work for me. Overall, it's worth the ticket price for a matinee show. Simple, charming, and non-complicated. Oh, there's the guy who likes having the purple nurple applied - wow.

Posted: 8/5/2012A review of The Dark Knight Rises by MyNameGoesHere1
It's not quite on par with the last Dark Knight, but how could it be? That being said, it's still an extremely well-made, entertaining movie. There are a few story arcs from the last several movies that come together in Rises that I appreciated seeing. Tom Hardy is superb, but there's only so much the man can do with half his face covered. Dude was seriously in shape - makes me want to hit the gym and I'm a chick. We can quibble about small things but Christopher Nolan doesn't make a bad movie. A definite must-see in the theater.

Posted: 9/27/2010A review of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps by MyNameGoesHere1
This wasn't a bad film, and Michael Douglas is his suave self. I just couldn't shake the feeling that Oliver Stone and Michael D were trying to backpedal a bit. Gordon Gekko, even though fictional, was a hero and role model to a lot of these real-life Wall Street crooks this movie tries to shift the focus toward. Now Gordon is the smaller-time, almost sympathetic crook and it's the bankers who are the truly greedy. Eye roll. The only reason Winnie is in this movie is to give Shia's character a reason to track down Gordon. She whines about her father, but financially manages to live very well. I just found it unexpectedly irritating.

Helluva movie! Come on, folks - a movie can't be 90 percent explosions. I loved this movie and I couldn't take my eyes off of Johnny Depp anytime he was on screen. It's nice to see him pull it back a little and play someone unlike Jack Sparrow's over-the-top (but still great) weirdness. How about Billy Crudup! He really nailed that Massachusetts aloofness in J. Edgar Hoover.
