Posted: 6/30/2011A review of The Adjustment Bureau by omarali85
The ad was epic, and I was thinking that moviemakers were finally giving me what I wanted... like "Inception". It didn't look original, but it was alright with me. But, did I get that film? Firstly, this movie's about an organization of suit and hat-wearing staffs that make sure that our lives go as according to plan. (Yeah, I'm talking about the story.) But, one of them snoozed off and goofed up in his job, hence creating an alternative present/future for the main characters, David and Elise. The bureau's job is to make sure that the two don't see each other, as to fulfill their respective dreams: being a senator, and being a renowned dancer nationwide. I liked the brute force that they used at the beginning, after the staff's goof-up but, honestly, for the rest of the film, I was expecting more of it... or worse. After all, this movie doesn't have threatening opponents, or enemies, hence giving David that chance to be obstinate... while searching for his dream girl. I don't know much about couples, but my elder sis pointed out that there was a poor chemistry existing between David and Elise. Everything else in the film was great, even the chase scenes at the climax. But, honestly, the movie lives with an odd and "empty" ending... and might leave you with more questions than answers. i was expecting a completely different ending, after the main characters got cornered. I mean, all that trouble, just for the bureau's anonymous boss to give both David and Elise open-ending lives? So there you have it. It's a good movie, well-written, fine acting and story writing, but movie suffers a bit from both a weak David-Elise chemistry, and the story's own resolution. I wanted to give this film a 3.5, but MSN doesn't support the .5 rating. So, there. I honestly wanted something slightly more epical than this film ending up being.

Night at the Museum 2 wasn't as fun as the first film, but it was good. I mean, the whole story took place in just one night (unlike the first film that lasted up to 3 nights or so), and I was actually hoping that Ben Steller's character might get into trouble with the guards. On the other hand, it may be a good family film to watch at home rather than in the theater, and I actually learnt much from it.

Posted: 1/11/2010A review of Sherlock Holmes by omarali85
Some of us have our view when it comes to this film, but SHERLOCK HOLMES didn't disappoint me greatly. It was an okay film to watch and, when it came to solving the mysterious-execution-gone-wrong, the whole case sort of reminded me of "Angels and Demons". I actually felt the suspense and, despite the length of the film, never got bored of it. I also liked the inner review of Holmes' fighting and crafty techniques, and minor events that happened behind the curtains... such as him receiving the keys to his handcuffs. I also suspect that the story of this film, like Holmes' facial look-and-feel, was based on original ideas. That itself cannot be compromised too easily. Above all, I thought this film was even too easy to watch. It didn't have my eyes spinned like the previous films, at least. The downside, however, is the high volume of sounds of things occuring all of a sudden, or in surprise. I just hope the sequel will be better, though.

Posted: 11/16/2009A review of Michael Jackson's This Is It by omarali85
Honestly, I thought this documentary film was related to the exclusive track of the same name, "This is It". (I was a lil bit disappointed on that part, although I understood it's about MJ's rehersal, prior to the London concert.) But, although I have a thing for documentaries, I thought THIS IS IT was okay to watch. Apart from generating profits for the studio company involved in making this film, I thought it was a lil bit absurd this sort of contribution ever came out to cinemas, or that the DVD would be out just within a month. On the other hand, you'll need to be an MJ fan, or someone who grew up with him (like me, for e.g.) to understand the purpose of this movie. Ultimately, and clearly, it is meant to show what MJ was up to before his final hour, something which he wanted to offer to concert goers in London, and the entertainers who were exclusively selected to be on the stage. The film's ok but, putting the sumptuous CGI and amazing tricks aside, there's not much to look at otherwise.

Posted: 7/10/2009A review of Knowing by omarali85
I thought this film was going to be a mix of National Treasure and cool action drama. However, I ended up being spooked by a story-less film, prior to midday - and on a weekday even. Also, the ending when two random kids were sent to space was so lame. This kind of film can, not only give you goose pumbs, ruin your movie-going spirit and purpose of being. Not my cup of latte, I'm afraid.

Posted: 12/19/2010A review of Tangled by omarali85
TANGLED is one of the Disney's films I'd been anticipating during the fourth quarter, and I finally got to see it. But, was it good? First, the characters. The varieties are good, and the main characters are great. The horse was one of my most interesting characters to stare at the whole time. The barbarians at Little Duckling were interesting, and fun contributors to the plot. I just wished that the main villain was as center-staged as they were. She being a one-woman show was not as grand, for a Disney villain, as... per se... the witch in "Sleeping Beauty", who at least had evil minions, whereas that of the original story didn't. The downside I had was how the film was made, and the plot itself. I honestly wished that this film was hand-drawn, like "The Princess and the Frog". That film was terrific. Sometimes, hand-drawn films are a bit more beautiful than CGI ones. And speaking of art, Disney should've focused a lot more at the tower than they did. This takes us to the plot. In the original story, the plot sounds like this: The king got a flower for his pregnant wife from an enchantress... in exchange for Rapunzel, Rapunzel grows up, a prince notices Rapunzel singing... and asks to marry her, she says yes, enchantress is angry at Rapunzel for something... and cuts off her hair, lures the prince to lose his sight, the prince wanders the lands for months... and hears Rapunzel singing, her tears restores his sight, and they live happily ever after at the prince's kingdom. So, yeah, the plot Disney showed us was completely altered. I really anticipated the last parts of the original story to make it into this film! And with the climax being a lil bit anti, I even wondered if it's worth killing off the enchantress to begin with. Still on the Disney adaptation, the action scenes were flawlessly slick, especially those with the horse, the romantic boat scene at the kingdom was nice, and there were a lot of funny moments too. It’s not all that, but it's a good film.

Posted: 7/8/2010A review of Toy Story 3 by omarali85
To be honest, I thought TOY STORY 3 couldn't have been better. At first, I didn't really know what to expect but, for some reason, this film totally bit my expectations. The beginning sort of reminded me of how Andy played with Woody in the first film, whereas the freak accident, of the toys being thrown out by accident, reminded me of Woody trying to rescue his penguin friend, as in Toy Story 2. (Too bad among the best supporting characters didn’t return in this movie.) Now that the toys feel disowned, they decided to sneak into a day care center. How twisted the events would turn out to be, as Woody left the center, the toys were tricked by a mean teddy bear, Lotso, to enter the wrong room. I thought this was a brilliant idea Disney-Pixar added to the movie. It even made me feel like ripping this bear apart. I began to think that Lotso might be a good guy after all. I mean, he did look baffled after seeing Buzz tied up. But then, he ordered his minions to bust Buzz's circuit, confirming my suspicion that he was indeed evil. In fact, he seems to have the personalities of the bully from the first film, and the prospector from the second. Other than Lotso, and his interesting flashback on how he became evil, the idea of Woody returning to the day care center, to rescue his friends, was a brilliant story part. What added the flavor to it were Buzz Lightyear being Spanish and, as I thought, Lotso waiting at the toys’ exit. Long story short, the main conflict of this film will surely keep you on your seats till the end. The ending was great as well. Apart from the toys being rescued by those alien toys and the “claw” at the dump yard, Lotso got his just dessert out of the blues, and Woody cleverly had him and his friends relocated… to the girl the run-away cowboy earlier encountered in the movie. The downside was a full-grown guy feeling so attached to his old toys. Is he still a kid? Oh, well. Other than that, one of the best summer movies to watch.

Posted: 9/21/2009A review of Public Enemies by omarali85
I'm not so sure about the historical accuracy of the film, but I actually enjoyed watchin PUBLIC ENEMIES. It's like the action version of "Catch Me If You Can", as I thought to myself. What made the film good was the believable actings (well executed and not overdone like some other films, even), the 1930's settings, which gave the film an unexpected culture, and it was educative. Many of us never even knew John Dillinger until this film showed up, and the importances his actions made to modernize the U.S. police system. To me, it was like watching a good film and a historical documentary at the same time.

Posted: 6/22/2009A review of Angels & Demons by omarali85
I was actually on vacation in Lebanon when I got to see this film. I still haven't seen the first film, "Da Vinci Code", but it was worth catching this one. Angels and Demons was actually a good film to me, as an individual movie goer, and I liked the kidnapping mystery Tom Hanks' character had to put up with, and the ancient science group versus the Catholic church idea. Unless you dispise a central character who talks too much, this is actually a well-made film for cinema goers to check out. (However, I'm not so sure if there are elements in this sequal that may offend the Catholic faith in real life, as that of the first film.)

Posted: 1/4/2013A review of Rise of the Guardians by omarali85
I had my doubts on "Rise of the Guardians", since the trailers didn't say much in full, but I finally got to see it. The movie isn't all that, but it needed more. It features what the movie called "Guardians": Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Sandman. You know, fictional holiday mascots. They had it easy, but the Boogie Man didn't. A holiday mascot not well recognized isn't visible to children and, being sick of that, Boogie did like Loki of Marvel Universe and launched a hostile takeover... by making kids worldwide no longer believing in the others! The plot unfortunately could have used more main, supporting characters, accuracy and re-writing. There was even a part that I thought would have potentials. When a goofing-up hero of the same predicament as Boogie , Jack Frost, did a frost attack, Boogie actually liked it and said "Finally! Someone who knows how to have a bit of fun!" Knowing their predicaments and combined powers, Boogie tried talking to Jack to join him, in exchange of unlocking his past, essential in saving the day... and the life of a humming bird. I was hoping it would happen, having potentials to making plot twists. But, that never happened. Boogie instead trashed Jack like a bag of garbage for refusing to join. Ultimately, the movie felt like it ended too soon. It was okay, but probably not the best animated film till date.

Posted: 7/25/2009A review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by omarali85
I'm not a devouted Harry Potter fan, but I'm afraid this sequel, although based on the book of the same subtitle, was lame. I liked the acting, film quality (i.e. acting and special effects) and the villians, however the story of this film was flat. Maybe it's because I'm aggressively anti-love, because of my personal experience last year, hence hate the love or fake love scenes of the film. Or, maybe it's just the case of the old wizard being killed off with movie goers' comments like "Is that it?" or, "The film's over already?!". Furthermore, although I only read the first two books - well, made to - I think the HP films can never squeze out the juices the book versions have to offer to fans.

Posted: 12/28/2012A review of Wreck-It Ralph by omarali85
Reminding me of classics like "Tron" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", as MSN even stated, I also called it "Captain N" done right. The movie's plot is well written and the best part of it. Ralph has been tossed off the building he'd been wrecking for 30 years. Not feeling so appreciated as his game's protagonist, "Felix", he thought of proving to his colleagues... and villains of our real-life games like Bowser etc... that he could be good too. So he went off to get a medal, as he was dared to. That itself was a gaming taboo called "Going 'Turbo'". But being a "Wreck" as he is, an accidental wrecking got him lost to a racing game called "Sugar Rush". This is where the plot really begins, as he winds up with the game's cute-but-funny heroine, "Vanellope". How the plot progresses from there, I loved it. (Spoiler alert!) Towards the climax, the plots became a hand-full: Ralph decides to help Vanellope win a race... where she isn't welcomed for being a glitch, in exchange for getting Ralph's medal back... which later on proves not important to him after all. This is the movie's main plot to keep an eye on, most especially the sad part where Ralph was convinced to bashing Vanellope's car, which the two had worked so hard to build together. That really horrified and, ultimately, brought all of us movie goers down. It felt like "The Jungle Book", when Baloo was convinced to telling Mowgli to go back to the village, a scene I'd been thinking of till this movie even premiered. The other plots are as follow: Sergeant Calhoun from the FPS and her inner demon of losing her husband-to-be to a Cy-Bug... and Felix feeling up that empty spot, and all the protagonists stopping a Cy-Bug, which Ralph accidentally allowed into "Sugar Rush", from overpopulating and, eventually, attacking all game arcades! Ultimately, "Wreck-It Ralph" proved that, not only video game movies can be done right, it is the best CGI movie and story I've seen since "Toy Story 3". Let's not also forget the fo...

Posted: 10/8/2009A review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by omarali85
I'd never come across the book version of this flim but, unlike the case of "Coraline", I figured "CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS" was based on a really short storybook for kids. "How did you come to this conclusion," you ask? If you've guessed it, the film was 'over-stretched'. On the bad side, the story is weak and, as my experience as a former kid, failed to have the capability in getting the attention of kid viewers. (If I were still under nine years of age, I would've not understood a single word from that film. Unlike Disney-Pixar's usual charm, this film failed to have charisma on characters' interactions and simple scene-by-scene music - as to compensate for the grammar dilemma I mentioned. Everything was going too fast for younger children to grasp.) Plus, what's with the nut case cop, Alex the Lion wanna-be? The way he squeezed his behind, towards the end of the film, could scare younger kids, for crying out loud! On the plus side, nice colors, characters and animation.

Posted: 1/21/2011A review of Life as We Know It by omarali85
This movie was rather "okay", but I feel like this is a lil bit repetitive. I mean, the plot feels too familiar, and no surprise that the fight between the two characters occured, as it did, before the climax, and the airport scene wasn't new either. Other than the repetition, the story wasn't that grand, and it was more of a drama, a movie genre I dislike with a passion, than a comedy. On the other hand, it wasn't that terrible. The story was well-told, the acting was good, and the movie helped out as weell.

Posted: 7/25/2009A review of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs by omarali85
To be honest, I think the first Ice Age film was the best, possibly due to a lot of things the other two sequels don't probably have. I disliked the second sequel, but at least it had a story comparing to this film. I mean, we only have the story of Ice Age 3 because Sid took three eggs with him and, then, got into trouble with the t-rex mother. That's not a memorable story to feast our eyes on his summer. And, about Diego thinking of leaving - Lame idea.
