Many of the songs on this album are old faves of mine, and I haven't heard them in years. So it was nice to hear them and contemplate the great diva's life. Oh yes, she was a diva, long before that term became popular, with all the high and low drama they are known for - and then some! But I loved her all the same, and I am glad that I had many opportunities to see her when she was at her peak. God bless you, Nina - I know you are holding court - wherever you are!

Posted: 1/22/2012A review of Red Tails by WatchOutNow
If you enjoy a good story, this is the movie for you. The characters are well developed and we get to know and like them. There are funny moments, sad moments, and all in all, it tells us about some guys who really loved their country. It's educational, too, since it is based on WW II and the people who fought in it. I'd see it again and I would buy the DVD. Enjoy it!

Way to go, Tyler Perry! This movie was more than I hoped for, and not as predictable as some here would have you believe. It's a comedy, and so much more - Enjoy!

The type of movie Id like to gather up all the neighborhood kids and take them to before school starts again in the Fall, just to get them inspired. I wasnt sure kids would be inspired by it until I noticed that there was this little kid sitting behind us who spelled some of the words along with Akeelah - something that would have ordinarily been annoying turn out to be a kind of cute addition to the movie-going experience! There are some moments when the movie reminds me of Boyz in the Hood but I attribute this to the films location and Fishburnes stirring ability to play roles that get all up inside a persons psyche, causing them to do something they might not normally do (Neo takes the red pill and goes into the Matrix). Once again he helps bring out the hero in the protagonist. Not a bad image for an actor to have not a bad image for kids to see on screen. I was a bit disappointed by the ending, but it certainly made the movie less predictable. Id encourage families with pre-teens and teens to go, and get pumped up about education. Its not a corny movie, despite so many positive role models yet its for all ages. I will be buying the DVD.

Of course, one could argue with me, and that would be OK, but these are the songs I remember and love best. I saw Nina Simone perform these songs at a time when her music had a great influence on me and my peers. Her raw emotions and uninhibited interaction with the audience was something that you may never see again in a live performance. Nina's concerts had a quality of intimacy, whether held at NYC's Town Hall, or at the Village Gate; people wanted to communicate with her, and of course, she with them - and she did! Outspoken and forceful, perhaps it cost her something in her career - if you look at things that way. But she was answering to a higher power than money; she was true to herself. At my age, she is still a role model of sorts for me. She reminds me to speak my truth. I remember her today.

Posted: 11/7/2004A review of Ray by WatchOutNow
This is a great biopic, even if you never heard of Ray Charles! Jamie Foxx's gift for imitating people gives you the feeling at times that he really is Ray Charles. However, you can tell there is much respect for Mr. Charles both in Jamie's performance, and in the production of the film itself. I especially liked the references to other music greats from his era - it was great hearing some of the old "sides" - that's because back then they played records which had a side 1 and side 2. It's got its serious moments too, but I don't want to give the movie away. Just go see it; it's for adults and you'll learn a lot about a very interesting person in American history.
