Posted: 6/4/2007A review of Because I Said So by kent521
Mandy Moore exudes a sweet, quirky, hapless, innocent vibe in this performance ... my issue is not at all with her performance, her character, or even the ending (she does end up with the 'right guy'), however, this movie could have been so much more! The movie was really more about the overly neurotic mom who was difficult to feel any kind of empathy for whatsoever ... maybe Dianne Keaton was fun in the 80's as a career woman trying to manage a baby, but all love for her is lost in this picture. Hopefully one day, Ms. Moore will get the shot that she deserves to act in a great movie (with a budget) with a great script and great co-stars.

Posted: 6/4/2007A review of Pan's Labyrinth by kent521
I have seen literally hundreds of movies over the past decade (what can I say ... it's a hobby), and I can honestly say that I have never seen one like this one! This is probably one of the most unique and distinctive movies that you will ever see. It is a dark and beautifully made blend of fantasy and reality. This is not a sanatized, happy ending fairy tale that we have all been told as kids growing up ... this is the 'alter ego' of the traditional fairy tale ... this is the fairy tale in which 'little red riding hood' meets a fate more horrible than the big bad wolf! Fantastic and intertaining ... well worth seeing.

It is truly a shame that this movie didn't get more mainstream attention ... this was a great date movie ... the writers and producers allowed its story and characters to represent the sweetness, pain, innocence, hope and joy that are 'real-life' ... watching this movie you could relate to the characters and the story in a way that few movies allow. Welcome back Jen ... it's great to see you back!

About the only thing epic about this movie was the truly EPIC waste of time that I spent in watching this movie. If you see it on DVD, let the menu section play and listen to the narration ... it is probably the only time during the entire movie that you will actually laugh!

OK - I was a big fan of the original, so, naturally, I was excited to see the sequel, but I went into it knowing two things - first, I knew what to expect from this genre of movie, second, I knew that this was a sequel (therefore would not have the same novelty as the original). Having said that, I think that the people who I have read whining about the violence and lack of oritinality need to quietly excuse themselves from the theatre and rent The Sound of Music on the way home as that would no doubt fill the unexplained need that they have to complain about the corporate greed of Hollywood and the unraveling of moral fabric. Yes, it was violent and did not have the same novelty as the original, but, in all fairness, this was a good sequel ... if you were a fan of the original, this is worth seeing. This movie does accomplish something unique beyond simply telling the next chapter ... it functions as both a pre-quel and sequel, answering questions about the history leading up to the original Underworld as well as the events happening after Victors death. All in all, worth seeing!

Posted: 12/28/2005A review of King Kong by kent521
After watching the trailer to this movie be hyped beyond belief for the holiday season, I went to watch this movie last week. Let me say right up front, that this is definately one movie that needs to be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated, and well worth the price of admission. However, do yourself a favor and skip the first hour of this three hour movie ... the first hour of the movie leading up to the expedition to Skull Island does little to develop the characters or the plot ... the first hour could have easily been reduced to 10 or 15 minutes and been just as effective. The scene with Kong battling the T-Rex gets all the press, but the scene with the bugs was great edge-of-your-seat fun!

After watching the trailiers with anticipation, I finally went to see this movie last night. I read the books as a child, but now that I am a 30 something, I dont remember much about the books, but this movie definately deserves your attention ... everything about this movie from the story it told, to the cast, to the CGI and even the soundtrack were incredible! While this is not traditional Disney fare for young children (dont let the talking animals fool you), this is not a movie for the youngest members of the family due to the intense battle scene. This movie has a lot to say (and a lot worth hearing) ... dont just watch, but listen ... you wont be disappointed! I cant wait for the sequels!

There really aught to be a way of rating this movie an 'ohhh, hellll no', but as it is, we are forced to choose from a scale of 1-5 stars ... this movie is not even worth the 1 star rating I was forced to give it as the lowest possible option! If you are a necrophiliac cannibal with a marginal IQ, you might (and I stress MIGHT) come out of this movie feeling as though you had invested two hours of your life in a productive manner ... but, for those who may prefer a more intelligent thriller ... this isn't it ... enough said.
