It seems only fitting that Nicole Richie's weekend baby shower would have a "Wizard of Oz" theme. After all, she's going to need brains, courage and heart to navigate the perilous, paparazzi-crammed world of celebrity motherhood.

People and Us Weekly report the stork-awaiting starlet was feted by about 90 friends and family Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif., with her favorite movie serving as the soiree's inspiration.

Among the special touches provided by celebrity party planner Mindy Weiss: a yellow brick pathway, life-size models of the film's main characters -- Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow and the Wicked Witch of the West -- and a ruby slipper-topped "Oz" cake decorated with the words, "There's no place like having a baby at home."

But did the bash, which was hosted by Richie's mom, Brenda, with some help from her sister Sophia and pals Paris Hilton and Masha Gordon, offer some insight into the contents of her refreshingly bulbous belly?

According to People, there were a few clues among the gifts, including boy-centric sneakers and a maternity shirt with a boy emblazoned on it.

You'll recall that Nicole, whose Joel Madden-bred bun in the oven will reportedly be done baking in January, told Diane Sawyer they wanted the baby's sex to be a surprise, a plan Paris reiterated last week when she fessed up to being stumped over what to get her sometime BFF.

"She doesn't know if she's having a boy or a girl," Hilton blabbed to E! Online. "I thought for sure she'd want to know, but she decided to wait."

The invitation for the shower, obtained by In Touch, gave no gender hints, although it did begin with the sugary sweet sentiment, "Babies make your heart sing and feel warm all over."

As previously reported, the couple asked guests to donate baby loot to their newly established Richie-Madden Children's Fund, although for those who did want to shower them with presents, they offered this suggestion: "We would love you to bring a book to start a library for Baby Madden!"

Us reports this was the first of five (yes, five) showers planned for Nicole.

"They're so excited," a pal tells People. "They can't wait to meet their little baby."

Paris Hilton is spotted in New York on Nov. 13.

Meanwhile, when Paris wasn't giving serious thought as to what to get Nicole (we're thinking a Swarovski-encrusted stroller with the words "That's Tot" written on it), she actually was doing something that helped others.

In a nice change from her recent stripper pole-polishing act at a New York hot spot, the would-be philanthropist popped up in Las Vegas Thursday night for a charity auction to benefit the Nevada Cancer Institute.

TMZ.com reports bidders excitedly dug into their deep pockets for the chance to spend a night partying with Paris in Sin City, with the winning bidder ponying up $35,000 for the honor.

And while it would be easy to poke fun at how Hilton's idea of doing good is hanging with the hoi polloi (well-heeled though they may be), it should be noted that she magnanimously agreed to accompany two other bidders out on the town after they also offered to plunk down $35,000.

For those too lazy to do the math, that means Paris raised $105,000 for the cancer center, not bad for a single night of altruism.
